Ditch the Heat: Your Guide to Effortless, Salon-Worthy Curls Without the Damage
Hair experimentation has been a lifelong passion, from a vibrant box dye phase in college to growing out my locks long enough for multiple donations. Now, my obsession has shifted to hair tools, scrutinising which ones truly deliver value. The only catch? Many of these innovations involve a significant amount of heat, leaving my hair craving a break. This is precisely where another one of my ongoing experiments comes into play. Over my nearly five years here, I’ve discovered a range of heatless curling tools that promise zero heat damage, with some even halving my styling time. So, without keeping secrets, I’m sharing my favourite finds, complete with their individual strengths and weaknesses, that have helped me achieve waves, curls, and even salon-quality blowouts, all without plugging in a single device.
The Best Heatless Curlers, According to an Editor
Easiest to Use: The Original Sleepy Tie
This clever scrunchie-like tool is a must-try for anyone with medium to long hair. I’ve found it particularly effective for extending the life of blowouts or curls previously created with hot tools.
How it Works:
The Sleepy Tie is surprisingly simple to use. The creator’s website offers a helpful step-by-step video. Essentially, you brush your hair, gather it as if to tie a ponytail, and then wrap it around the tool’s “arch.” Hold the arch down with one hand and use the other to secure the scrunchie around it, creating a bun. It might sound fiddly, but I mastered it within two or three quick tries. Once secured, this bun stays put, even overnight, and is remarkably comfortable. My Experience:
Initially, I wasn’t thrilled with the morning-after results. My front roots felt a bit pulled back, and the hair at the crown felt like it had been in a tight ponytail too long. However, my panic was short-lived. Once my hair had a chance to “fall” during my 1.5-hour commute, it settled beautifully, and the waves from the previous day were still perfectly intact. Impressively, they lasted all day without any product.

Best for Volume: Kitsch Satin Jumbo Flexi Rods Hair Rollers (Set of 4)

These Flexi Rods have been all over the internet, and I was eager to try them. The idea of achieving a salon-worthy style after seeing countless videos of people using them on planes was tempting. However, the reality was a humbling experience.
The Learning Curve:
The process, which seems straightforward on paper – section hair, brush forward, wrap, bend, and snap – is significantly more challenging in practice. Achieving the correct tension is crucial; too much slack and the hair will slip out. The rods themselves are quite delicate. Leaning forward or turning your head the wrong way can cause them to fall out. Sleeping with them in proved difficult, as any slight movement could loosen them, and they’re not exactly comfortable to lie on.Achieving the Look:
My testing was limited to evenings when I could sit up and move carefully. I lightly dampened my hair before applying the rods for about three hours. Despite the struggle, the results were incredible. The volume was astounding, and I achieved the most intense waves, which I doubt I could replicate with hot tools. A bit of hairspray or texture spray was all that was needed to keep them in place. If you can overcome the steep learning curve and have the time for your hair to set, these rods deliver a fantastic style.

Most Comfortable: RobeCurls Heatless Hair Curler Set

I first encountered the RobeCurls Curling Headband over four years ago and have been consistently impressed with its ease of use and comfort. It’s one of the most user-friendly heatless tools I’ve tried.
Simple Application:
Start by parting slightly damp hair down the middle and dividing it into two sections. Place the headband on your head, ensuring equal lengths on each side. A claw clip can be helpful to keep it in place during styling. Take one section of hair and wrap it tightly around one side of the headband, creating tension for tighter curls. Secure the ends with the provided scrunchie. Repeat on the other side. Twist each side and then connect the ends of the headband behind your head, creating a chic updo while your curls set.Overnight Comfort:
You can leave the RobeCurls in until your hair is dry or wear it to bed. The headband is crafted from satin charmeuse with a microfiber fleece lining, making it exceptionally comfortable for overnight wear, effectively concealing the internal wire. The end result is bouncy curls that maintain their volume for hours. For maximum longevity, a touch of hairspray is recommended.

Best for Tight Curls: Original Octocurl Heatless Curling System

This might appear to be one of the most unusual hair tools you’ve ever seen – and you wouldn’t be wrong. While I’ve tested many, few rank as high on the “weird scale.” However, it’s also surprisingly one of the most effective.
Time Investment:
Be prepared to dedicate a bit more time to the Octocurl compared to other heatless curlers. The exact duration depends on your desired style. For loose waves, fewer sections mean less wrapping time. For tighter curls, smaller sections and more wrapping are required. Given the impressive results, this time investment is absolutely worthwhile. Even with a 15-20 minute evening routine, the process remains straightforward, aided by a helpful booklet with step-by-step instructions and styling tips.Comfort and Practicality:
My favourite aspect of the Octocurl is its comfort. I chose the cotton poplin material (also available in satin and microfiber), which felt incredibly soft and cushiony, almost like sleeping on an extra pillow. A crucial tip: make the Octocurl the last step of your nightly routine. Navigating tasks like brushing your teeth or changing clothes with this distinctive tool on your head is less than ideal.

Most Unique Styling: Willbond Spiral No-Heat Wave Curlers Kit

Remember that “weird scale” I mentioned? These multi-coloured curling tubes are at the very top. They also claim the title for the most fun I’ve ever had doing my hair. I can already picture ordering these for nieces’ sleepovers in the future.
The Application Process:
In all seriousness, these unconventional curlers come with their pros and cons. A significant downside is that they require the most time to apply compared to the other products. You’ll also need to factor in trial and error while learning to pull your hair through each tube using the provided hook. If not done correctly, you can end up with a tangled mess. However, successfully hooking your hair through is incredibly satisfying. The Results:
Beyond the visual appeal of a head full of rainbow curlers, these tools do a surprisingly good job. While they might not produce the neatest or tightest curls, the resulting waves are brushable, styleable, and surprisingly long-lasting. I’d say these are designed more for the entertaining experience than precise styling, and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.

Overall Recommendations
- For Curl Longevity: The Sleepy Tie excels at ensuring styles last for days without the need for heat tools. It’s quick to use and comfortable for sleeping.
- For Fresh Curls: The Octocurl is the clear winner for achieving beautiful curls on hair not previously styled. If you can look past its unconventional appearance and invest the time in proper wrapping, the results are undeniably gorgeous.
How I Tested These Heatless Curlers
All heatless curlers were tested on slightly dampened hair and worn for at least eight hours, preferably overnight. The Flexi Rods were an exception, as I found them unsuitable for overnight wear. My evaluation criteria included ease of use, comfort levels, and the quality of the curling results.
Why Embrace Heatless Curlers?
- Reduced Heat Damage: This is the primary reason to explore heatless curling. If you’re noticing split ends or breakage, it’s a clear sign to switch up your routine. While hot tools offer confidence, giving them a rest is beneficial for long-term hair health.
- Time-Saving Hack: Beyond being healthier, heatless curlers can be a significant time-saver. On days when even brushing feels like a chore, these tools require minimal effort to set your hair up for success. Most allow you to get on with your day or even sleep while your hair curls.
Do You Really Need to Buy a Heatless Curler?
Technically, no! For a budget-friendly and creative approach, several trending social media methods can achieve decent heatless curls using items you likely already own.
- The Sock Method: Similar to the wrapping techniques used with the Octocurl and RobeCurl, this involves using long socks. Two clips are needed to secure the socks to your head. Lightly dampen your hair, create two sections, and begin wrapping. Some have experimented with splitting sections further and reversing wrapping directions for varied waves. While great in theory, clipping socks to your head can be uncomfortable for sleeping and may cause tugging.
- The Clip Method: Part your hair down the middle (or your preferred part) into two sections. Tightly twist each section inwards towards your chin and secure with a clip when further twisting isn’t possible. Personally, I found this method ineffective, with my hair falling out within minutes. I also disliked the constant feeling of my hair against my face.
