Phoenix Goalkeeper’s Blunder Sparks Coaching Resignation in Derby Disaster
Wellington Phoenix’s derby clash against Auckland City turned into a nightmare scenario on Saturday, culminating in a humiliating 5-0 defeat and the immediate resignation of head coach Giancarlo Italiano. The pivotal moment, however, arrived in the 24th minute with a goalkeeping error of almost unbelievable proportions, gifting Auckland City an opener and setting the tone for a disastrous afternoon.
The incident unfolded deep within Auckland’s territory. Wellington Phoenix midfielder Jake Girdwood-Reich launched a long ball forward, a seemingly innocuous clearance. However, the trajectory of the ball, combined with an uncharacteristic decision by Phoenix goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi to venture outside his penalty area, created a calamitous situation.
As the ball descended, Oluwayemi attempted to head it clear. Instead, the ball struck his head with a glancing blow, redirecting it slowly but surely towards the vacant net. The sheer disbelief among players and spectators alike was palpable.
Commentator Jason Pine captured the shock, exclaiming, “Goodness me, what an absolute catastrophe for Josh Oluwayemi.” He went on to describe the bizarre circumstances of Jake Girdwood-Reich’s first A-League goal, albeit one he wouldn’t be credited for.
Fellow commentator Jacob Spoonley highlighted the surreal nature of the event. “No one knows how to react to this, confusion is all around Sky Stadium,” he observed. “Josh Oluwayemi can step back into his 18-yard box, he’s under no pressure, there’s no one near him. That is entirely manageable… Auckland didn’t even know what to do, a bizarre opening to derby number three.”
Oluwayemi himself appeared stunned, his reaction a mixture of bewildered applause and a moment of despair with his hands clasped to his head.
Adding to the irony, the goal, which was estimated to have travelled close to 70 metres, was ultimately ruled an own goal. This meant Girdwood-Reich, who had sent the ball on its fateful journey, would have to wait longer for his maiden goal for Auckland City.
The calamitous own goal was merely the prelude to further torment for Oluwayemi and the Wellington Phoenix. Before the half-time whistle, Auckland City had extended their lead significantly. Jesse Randall netted a brace, and Guillermo May added another goal, leaving the Phoenix reeling at a daunting 4-0 deficit.
Recognising the need for a change, Oluwayemi was substituted at halftime, his evening brought to an abrupt and ignominious end. The second half offered little respite for the Wellington side, with Lachlan Brook sealing the comprehensive 5-0 victory in the 74th minute.
The aftermath of the derby defeat brought further significant news. Wellington Phoenix officially confirmed that head coach Giancarlo Italiano had tendered his resignation in the wake of the embarrassing loss. The club’s performance, which sees them languishing in 10th place on the league ladder, clearly proved too much for the departing manager.
Oluwayemi’s journey to the A-League has seen him come through the ranks of Tottenham Hotspur’s youth system and represent England at various youth levels. However, this particular match will undoubtedly be a moment he’ll be keen to put behind him as quickly as possible. The sheer distance of the own goal and the subsequent collapse of his team’s performance have etched this derby as one to forget for the young goalkeeper and the entire Wellington Phoenix organisation. The club now faces the challenge of rebuilding confidence and finding a new direction under a new coach.
