A local school readies students for high school and beyond

A New Approach to Career Exploration

In the small town of Dugger, Indiana, a unique event known as the “Bulldog Showcase” brought together students, local businesses, and educational institutions to explore future career opportunities. This initiative was organized by Dugger Union Community Schools, aiming to provide students with a hands-on experience that could help shape their academic and professional paths.

The Event Overview

The “Bulldog Showcase” featured a variety of booths set up by local businesses, labor unions, and colleges. These booths served as interactive platforms where students could engage with professionals in different fields, learn about potential careers, and gain insights into the skills required for various jobs. In addition to these booths, student organizations such as the pep squad, archery team, and FFA also participated, showcasing their activities and the opportunities they offer to fellow students.

Student Participation and Engagement

Students from grades 6 through 12 were invited to attend the event, making it an inclusive experience for all age groups within the school community. The event not only provided an opportunity for students to explore different career options but also encouraged them to think critically about their future plans.

To make the day more enjoyable, the school provided a range of refreshments, including snow cones, chips, and popcorn. These treats helped keep students energized throughout the event, especially on a warm day when staying hydrated and fueled was essential.

Principal’s Vision

Eric Brewer, the principal of Dugger Union Community High School, shared his thoughts on the event. He mentioned that the idea for the showcase originated during a conversation last fall, where he and other staff members noticed many students lacked clear plans for their futures.

“Kinda a dream we discovered last fall. We’ve talked to a lot of kids and observing a lot of the things about kids who really didn’t have a real plan in life. We were talking to a lot of kids about what are you thinking about doing after. A lot of dialogue and it really hit us at homecoming, when we were having a homecoming court and announcing the pageantry and all of a sudden we found out that oh I’m in this club and this club and this club and my plans for the future, I have no plans for the future,” said Brewer.

Future Plans

Brewer expressed his hope that the “Bulldog Showcase” would become an annual event. He believes that such initiatives can play a crucial role in helping students identify their interests and goals early on, which can lead to better decision-making in their academic and professional lives.

Conclusion

The “Bulldog Showcase” is a testament to the commitment of Dugger Union Community Schools in providing students with opportunities to explore their future. By bringing together various stakeholders, the event not only enriches the educational experience but also fosters a sense of community and shared purpose among students, educators, and local businesses. With continued support, this event has the potential to make a lasting impact on the students of Dugger.
