Abia State Embraces Digital Future with Mass Employment of Tech Graduates
Abia State is set to bolster its civil service with a significant infusion of digital talent, as Governor Alex Otti has approved the immediate employment of 50 outstanding graduates from the TechRise Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programme. This landmark decision underscores the administration’s commitment to leveraging technological expertise for the advancement of the state.
The announcement was made at the recent TechRise Cohort 2 graduation ceremony held in Umuahia, a vibrant gathering that celebrated the culmination of intensive training for a new generation of tech professionals. Governor Otti personally directed the Head of Service to commence the necessary documentation for the successful candidates, emphasizing that the employment process would adhere strictly to established due procedures and require the presentation of valid credentials.
In a move to facilitate this crucial recruitment, Governor Otti announced a temporary lifting of the existing employment embargo within the state civil service. This strategic pause is specifically designed to accommodate the 50 TechRise graduates and will be reinstated once the onboarding process is fully completed. This ensures that qualified individuals are not held back by bureaucratic hurdles, allowing the state to quickly harness their skills.
Empowering Tech Talent: Beyond Employment
The commitment to the TechRise graduates extends beyond immediate job placement. Governor Otti revealed that a substantial cohort of 849 graduates from the programme will be equipped with laptops, a vital tool to support their ongoing professional development and enable them to apply their newly acquired skills effectively. This initiative aims to provide them with the necessary resources to thrive in their respective careers and contribute to the state’s technological landscape.
Furthermore, recognizing exceptional performance, prize winners among the graduates will receive an additional N100,000 cash reward. This incentive is designed to acknowledge and celebrate outstanding achievement, fostering a culture of excellence within the programme.
Adding to the celebratory spirit and practical support, Governor Otti also approved N50,000 in Christmas support for each graduate. This gesture demonstrates the administration’s care and appreciation for their dedication. In a further effort to ease their transition, the governor also directed that transportation be provided to help the graduates reach their respective local government headquarters, ensuring they can begin their new roles without undue logistical challenges.
TechRise: A Strategic Investment in Abia’s Youth
Governor Otti articulated that the TechRise programme is a direct reflection of his administration’s core belief: that the future of Abia State is intrinsically linked to the boundless creativity and untapped potential of its youth. The graduation of this cohort marks a significant milestone, bringing the total number of individuals trained under the TechRise initiative to an impressive 1,359 within a span of just 12 months.
These newly skilled graduates are poised to provide the critical human capital necessary to propel Abia’s ambitious digital transformation drive. The governor highlighted that TechRise represents a strategic investment in human capital, with the overarching goals of fostering innovation, generating sustainable employment opportunities, and enhancing the efficiency of service delivery across the state.
The comprehensive training curriculum provided participants with in-demand skills across various ICT domains. Graduates have acquired proficiency in:
- Full-Stack Development: Enabling them to build and manage complete web applications.
- Cybersecurity: Equipping them to protect digital assets and infrastructure.
- Mobile App Development: Empowering them to create innovative applications for diverse platforms.
- Data and Artificial Intelligence Engineering: Preparing them to harness the power of data and AI for problem-solving and advancement.
Governor Otti urged the graduates to embrace a mindset of continuous learning, emphasizing the importance of regularly updating their skills. He implored them to deploy their newly acquired expertise towards the tangible improvement of Abia’s economy, urging them to be active agents of change.
The success of the TechRise programme was also attributed to robust inter-agency collaboration. The governor extended his commendations to the relevant ministries and the 17 local government councils for their instrumental roles in ensuring the effective implementation and overall success of this vital initiative. Their collective effort has laid a strong foundation for Abia’s digital future.
