Labour Party Chairman in Abia State Vows Fair Primaries for 2027 Elections
Peter Azubuike, the newly appointed chairman of the Labour Party in Abia State, has made a strong commitment to ensuring that all aspiring candidates will have an equal opportunity to compete in the party’s upcoming primaries. This is aimed at selecting the best representatives for the 2027 elections.
In an interview with journalists following the party congress held in Umuahia on Saturday, Azubuike emphasized the importance of fairness and inclusivity. He stated, “What we want is our best 11. We are not going to compromise that, and rest assured that everybody will be given a fair chance. That is what primaries are all about.”
Azubuike also outlined his vision for the future of the Labour Party in the state. He mentioned that in the coming weeks, the party will begin to show more energy and focus on building upon existing efforts. His plan includes reaching out to areas that may have been previously overlooked or underrepresented within the party structure.
He highlighted the need to connect with every part of the state, stating, “In every nook and cranny of our state, there are places that may not have been visibly engaged in the Labour Party.” Azubuike expressed his intention to bring these communities into the fold, ensuring that they feel represented and involved.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the current governor, who has played a significant role in supporting the party’s activities. “The governor has done a whole lot of work for us. He has even made it easier for us,” Azubuike noted. He added that people are already looking forward to engaging with the party and participating in its initiatives.
Addressing Allegations of Internal Disputes
There have been rumors suggesting that the party might favor certain individuals for the presidential election. In response, Azubuike clarified, “I can assure you, my work is within the state. I am the state chairman. Anything beyond the state has everything to do with the leader of the party, Dr Alex Otti, who is the governor of our state. But I can assure you that the Labour Party at the state level is very settled.”
Additionally, he addressed concerns regarding the possibility of automatic ticket allocations for elected officials. “As we progress, you will know. Of course, you see, we just came on board. When the time comes, we are going to know the mode of primaries that will be adopted or implemented by the party. For now, any other thing is just a mere rumour. Rest assured that everybody will be given a fair chance.”
Commitment to Unity and Strength
In his acceptance speech after the congress, Azubuike pledged to unite the party and strengthen its presence across Abia State. He expressed gratitude to the party leaders for their confidence in him and committed to leveraging the popularity of Governor Alex Otti to secure victories in the 2027 elections.
His leadership aims to foster a sense of unity and collaboration within the party, ensuring that all members work together towards common goals. By focusing on grassroots engagement and inclusive practices, Azubuike hopes to build a stronger and more resilient Labour Party in Abia State.
