Higher Education: The Engine of Ethiopia’s Prosperity, Says Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has underscored the paramount importance of higher education institutions in steering Ethiopia towards a prosperous future. This commitment is a central theme in his recently unveiled book series, “The Medemer State,” which outlines a comprehensive vision for national development.
The Prime Minister articulated these views during a distinguished guest lecture delivered at Addis Ababa University on the occasion of its 75th anniversary. The lecture, titled “The Role of Intellectuals in National Prosperity,” brought together prominent academics and high-ranking government officials, marking a significant conclusion to a series of commemorative events. Prime Minister Abiy himself is an alumnus of Addis Ababa University, adding a personal dimension to his address.
In his discourse, Prime Minister Abiy presented a compelling vision of the modern intellectual as a proactive force for societal transformation. He emphasized the value of considered reflection over impulsive reaction, stating, “Ideas are the power of change, and intellectuals are agents of change. The change they bring within society leads a country toward prosperity.”
He implored intellectuals to cultivate a deep respect for ideas, engage in critical thinking, pursue extensive reading, and actively dedicate themselves to problem-solving and the diligent pursuit of solutions.
“Today, as Addis Ababa University celebrates its 75th anniversary, I am honored to engage with students and faculty on the role of Ethiopian intellectuals in addressing national challenges,” the Prime Minister remarked, highlighting his personal connection to the institution and the significance of the occasion.
Fostering Innovation and Practical Application
A key aspect of Prime Minister Abiy’s vision involves the imperative for higher education institutions to seamlessly integrate their core functions of teaching, research, and technological advancement. This synergy, he argued, is crucial for generating innovations that possess tangible, practical applications beneficial to society and the economy.
“The Medemer State firmly believes that these institutions are indispensable to Ethiopia’s journey toward prosperity, and we are committed to making this vision a reality,” he asserted, signaling a strong governmental resolve to support and enhance the role of universities.

The Prime Minister further elaborated that harnessing the collective intellectual and operational capacity of Ethiopia’s universities is fundamental to accelerating the nation’s development trajectory and ensuring sustained, long-term prosperity for all its citizens. This integrated approach, he believes, will unlock new avenues for growth and address complex national challenges effectively.
