AFL Bottle Toss: Fan Targets Star Player

Swans Supporter Accused of Projectile Throw After MCG Clash

A fiery encounter between the Hawthorn Hawks and Sydney Swans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Thursday night has been marred by an alleged incident involving a disgruntled Swans supporter. Hawks star Nick Watson has come forward claiming a projectile, believed to be a soft drink bottle, was thrown at him and his teammates following the final siren.

The Hawks secured a strong victory over the Swans, with the scoreboard reading 99-82 in favour of the home side. Watson sealed the win with the final goal of the match, a moment that was unfortunately overshadowed by the alleged act of unsportsmanlike conduct.

Speaking to Nova radio on Friday morning, Watson described a lively exchange with a group of Sydney supporters after the game. He recounted a “cheeky sledging match” that escalated when one individual reportedly hurled a Coke bottle onto the field.

“They were throwing Coke Zero cans out there,” Watson told the Nova hosts. “I saw one of them go straight past me. It just landed right next to us, lucky it didn’t hit any players. I was giving (the Swans fans) heaps, but I am not sure a Coke Zero bottle to the face would have been nice.”

Images circulating in the media appear to corroborate Watson’s account, showing a bottle in flight over his head in the immediate aftermath of the final siren.

Watson admitted he had no information on whether any action had been taken against the individual responsible. “I don’t know what happened to the guy (who threw it),” he stated.

The Australian Football League (AFL) has confirmed it is actively investigating the incident. In conjunction with Victoria Police and the MCG, the league is working to identify the alleged offender.

An AFL spokesperson commented on the matter, stating, “A patron threw a soft drink bottle at the final siren towards Hawthorn players. The alleged offender was not from the Swans cheer squad and his identity is currently unknown.”

The league emphasised its zero-tolerance policy towards such behaviour. “We have the best fans in the world, but throwing objects at players will never be acceptable and if caught you will lose the privilege of being able to attend the footy.”

The investigation is being spearheaded by Victoria Police, with the MCG providing all necessary information to assist their inquiries. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining respectful conduct at sporting events, and the potential consequences for those who fail to do so.

The AFL’s commitment to player safety and the integrity of the game is paramount, and this investigation underscores their dedication to ensuring a positive and secure environment for all attendees and participants. The outcome of the police investigation will determine any further disciplinary actions.
