AFL legend Malthouse allegedly attacked intruder in home raid, court told

The Alleged Home Invasion and the Response of a Football Legend

A legendary AFL coach, Mick Malthouse, was involved in a dramatic incident last year when he allegedly defended his family against an attempted home invasion. According to court proceedings in Melbourne, Malthouse used an exercise bar to confront intruders, resulting in a series of events that have now come to light.

Details of the Incident

New information about the alleged break-in was revealed in court as one of the three men charged made a bail application. Victoria Police detective Tyler Sherlock provided details about the events leading up to the confrontation. He stated that one of the accused, Joshua Di Cello, had stolen a key fob from a construction company that had completed cladding work on Mr Malthouse’s apartment complex on September 1 last year.

Di Cello, along with co-accused Aysar Mashu and Andrew Carroll, reportedly arrived at the complex just after midnight on September 4. They used an internal stairwell to attempt to break into Mr Malthouse’s penthouse. According to Mr Sherlock, Malthouse heard noises from the front door and confronted the individuals, who were in possession of a jimmy bar and actively trying to break through the door.

Malthouse reportedly swung an exercise pole at them, causing them to retreat to the basement. A second confrontation occurred when Malthouse followed the group, who were by that stage allegedly trying to break open a door to flee. During this encounter, Carroll raised a jimmy bar he was in possession of. Malthouse struck Carroll in the head with the exercise bar, causing him to drop it.

Injuries and Aftermath

Mr Malthouse was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver by Mr Mashu during the incident. However, the injuries were described as superficial and did not cause any organ damage. About an hour later, Mr Carroll was seen on CCTV with “a significant welt under his left eye,” according to Mr Sherlock.

The court heard that Malthouse later told officers, “I managed to crack one of them with the exercise bar … I whacked him twice.” This statement highlights the intensity of the situation and the actions taken by Malthouse to protect his family.

Other Alleged Crimes

Police allege that Mr Di Cello worked with others to commit a series of property and car thefts between August and September 2025. The locations targeted included jewellery shops, offices, and a Dandenong South property where $60,000 worth of boxed children’s toys were stolen. Mr Sherlock noted that Di Cello was allegedly seen wearing Nike sportswear during several of these incidents.

Legal Proceedings and Bail Application

Mr Di Cello, Mr Mashu, and Mr Carroll have since been arrested and are currently on remand. The trio has yet to enter a plea regarding the alleged break-in of Mr Malthouse’s property.

Mr Di Cello’s lawyer, Nadia Giogianni, argued that her client was seeking bail so he could attend a drug rehabilitation centre. She also mentioned that her client, who is 36 years old, is a vulnerable person with an intellectual disability. However, Mr Sherlock contested this, stating that it was in the community’s interests for Di Cello to remain in custody due to his lengthy criminal history.

“He’s a persistent, prolific thief,” Mr Sherlock said. A magistrate ultimately denied Mr Di Cello’s bail application this afternoon.
