AFL Team’s Secret Hit List Sparks Outrage Over Rival’s Girlfriend

The Controversy Surrounding the Leaked Essendon Player List

A recent incident involving the Brisbane Lions has sparked a heated debate in the Australian football community. The controversy began when confidential information about Essendon players was leaked online, revealing a list that targeted specific players with personal comments.

The list, which was shared on a Bomber supporter group on Facebook, included details about the strengths and weaknesses of Essendon’s players. One of the most notable entries was about Jaxon Prior, an Essendon star whose only strength was listed as ‘Bronte’—referring to his partner, Bronte Thompson. This detail led to widespread criticism from fans and media alike.

The comments about other players were equally controversial. Former Essendon captain Zach Merrett was described as ‘selfish’, while defender Ben McKay was labeled as having ‘low confidence’. These remarks were met with strong reactions from the public, with many condemning the content as toxic and sexist.

One fan wrote, “Toxic, sexist and paints a pretty decent picture of the men who play for Brisbane.” Another commented, “Listing Jaxon Prior’s only strength as his Partner, probably speaks of the toxic masculinity that runs through that club.” A third added, “Jeez that’s ordinary … bringing partners and families into that setting is a really slippery slope and a big no no, it should never have been written down.”

However, not all supporters viewed the comments in a negative light. Some believed the sledge was an in-joke, especially considering that Prior had previously played for the Lions. They suggested that the 24-year-old saw the humor in being ribbed about ‘punching above his weight’ when he started dating Bronte.

Reactions from the Lions Club

After their victory at Marvel Stadium, the Lions reached out to Prior. Coach Chris Fagan spoke about the incident, stating, “I spoke to Jaxon out on the field after the game, as did a lot of our players, and had a bit of a laugh and a joke together.” He emphasized that there was no malicious intent behind the comment, noting that the players knew Prior and his partner well.

Lions star Josh Dunkley also reached out to Prior after the game, saying, “He’s all good, which is nice.” Dunkley added, “We love ‘Priz’ and he’s been at our footy club for a long period of time so it’s good to see him going well for the Bombers.”

Fagan expressed his frustration over the leaking of the list during a post-match press conference. He criticized the individual who took the photos and shared them publicly, calling it an act of betrayal. “Somebody illegally took photos of information that was on a whiteboard and then decided to make a hero of themselves and put it out in the public domain,” he said.

Impact on the Club’s Policies

Fagan admitted that the incident made him reconsider allowing external people to access the club’s facilities. He mentioned that the practice of listing opposition players’ strengths and weaknesses was something he learned from former Wallabies mentor Eddie Jones. “We go out of our way to bring the community into our football club and use our facilities,” he said.

However, the leak has made him feel conflicted about maintaining this open approach. “For someone to do that, it’s really disappointing, and it makes you feel like not bringing the community in and just keeping it exclusive as an elite performance centre,” he added.

Community Response and Future Steps

Harris Andrews, a usually reserved Brisbane star defender, also expressed his anger over the incident. Meanwhile, Essendon coach Brad Scott remained unfazed, stating that the issue was for the Lions to handle. “Brisbane have done that (listing strengths and weaknesses) for years, so that’s nothing new,” Scott said. “I wouldn’t want that coming out of our building.”

As the controversy continues, the focus remains on how the club will move forward and ensure such leaks do not occur again. The incident has highlighted the importance of maintaining confidentiality and respect within the sport.
