The passing of the revered actor Ahn Sung-ki on the 5th marked a poignant moment for the Korean film industry and his countless admirers. In the wake of his departure, a particular photograph was chosen for his memorial, one that captured the late actor at the vibrant age of 35, radiating a youthful essence. A special documentary tribute, “Beloved Actor, Ahn Sung-ki,” aired on MBC on the afternoon of the 11th, meticulously chronicling the life and final moments of a true cinematic icon. The documentary delved into the extensive career of Ahn Sung-ki, a figure whose presence graced the history of Korean cinema for decades.
The chosen memorial photograph was originally taken on the Sinchon Campus of Yonsei University. It served as the poster image for the 1987 film “Our Joyful Young Days.” Photographer Gu Bon-chang, who captured the iconic shot, shared his recollections during the broadcast. He described the moment as exceptionally fleeting, expressing gratitude for being able to preserve “this one cut, this appearance.”
It was Ahn Sung-ki’s wife who ultimately selected this particular photograph as the memorial. Gu recounted that she had always held a special fondness for the image, stating, “That photo is the most pleasing to me.” He elaborated that to her, this youthful depiction, characterized by the actor wearing glasses and exuding a fresh, vibrant aura, represented the Ahn Sung-ki she cherished. This deep personal connection motivated her to choose it as his final tribute.

Ahn Sung-ki passed away at the age of 75 on the morning of the 5th. His passing occurred approximately six days after he collapsed at his home on December 30th. The incident involved him choking on food, leading to his admission to the ICU in an unconscious state.
The funeral arrangements reflected the profound respect held for Ahn Sung-ki within the film community. It was observed as a five-day film industry funeral. On the 9th, a solemn funeral mass and farewell ceremony were conducted at Myeongdong Cathedral, a place of significant cultural and spiritual importance.
The final journey of the beloved actor was marked by the presence of many prominent figures from the film industry. Actors Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung, among other notable personalities, served as pallbearers, carrying Ahn Sung-ki’s coffin and bidding him a final, heartfelt farewell.
