Val Kilmer’s Final Performance Brought to Life Through AI
Val Kilmer, the beloved Hollywood star, is set to make a posthumous return to the screen for his final role, a testament to the evolving capabilities of artificial intelligence. This marks a poignant moment, occurring one year after his passing from throat cancer at the age of 65 on April 1, 2025.
Kilmer had been slated to star in the film As Deep as the Grave prior to his death. However, his deteriorating health prevented him from participating in filming. In a groundbreaking decision, the filmmakers opted to employ AI technology to bring his character to life, allowing him to portray Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist.
The project has received the full endorsement of Kilmer’s estate, including his children, Mercedes and Jack. They have granted permission for the use of generative AI, utilising younger images and footage from his later years, much of which was generously provided by the family.
“His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this,” explained writer and director Coerte Voorhees to Variety. “He really thought it was an important story that he wanted his name on. It was that support that gave me the confidence to say, ‘Okay, let’s do this.’ Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”

Variety has also released the first AI-generated image of Kilmer as he will appear in the film, offering a glimpse into this unique cinematic endeavour.
Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes, shared a statement highlighting her support for the initiative. She stated, “He always looked at emerging technologies with optimism as a tool to expand the possibilities of storytelling. This spirit is something that we are all honouring within this specific film, of which he was an integral part.” The film also features a cast including Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi, and Abigail Breslin.
While the creative team and Kilmer’s family have embraced this innovative approach, the public reaction has been mixed, with some expressing significant reservations. Upon Variety‘s announcement, many took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to voice their concerns.
One commentator wrote, “I do not care how much permission they had to do this, no one should be allowed to do this. It should be illegal to resurrect the visage of dead people with genAI imo.” Another expressed a similar sentiment, stating, “No amount of moral dressing is going to change how sick and greedy this is. The family should be ashamed, to be honest.”
This is not the first instance of AI technology being used to feature Val Kilmer in a role. His return to screens as Lieutenant Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky in the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, deeply moved fans.

Following the sad news of his death, his poignant final film appearance in Top Gun: Maverick, alongside Tom Cruise, garnered renewed attention. Kilmer was famously known for his role as Iceman in the original 1986 blockbuster, Top Gun. Lead star Tom Cruise was instrumental in ensuring Kilmer could reprise his role as his on-screen rival.
Kilmer’s vocal cords were severely impacted by a tracheotomy in 2014, a consequence of his battle with throat cancer. However, AI technology was ingeniously employed to regenerate his voice for the 2022 blockbuster.
Fans were visibly emotional when Admiral Iceman made his return, sharing the screen with Tom Cruise’s Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.

In a particularly touching scene, Iceman communicated with Maverick through text displayed on a screen. The AI-generated voice allowed some of Kilmer’s dialogue to be heard, adding a layer of authenticity and emotional weight. Their on-screen conversation, where Iceman advised Maverick to “let go” of the past, was followed by scenes depicting Maverick attending his friend’s funeral. These moments resonated deeply with viewers, leading many to re-watch the poignant sequence after the news of Kilmer’s passing.
The iconic film star, celebrated for his roles in films like Top Gun and Batman, passed away from pneumonia on April 1, 2025. A death certificate obtained by TMZ confirmed the cause, with his daughter having previously revealed that a lung infection was the ultimate cause of her father’s death.

The death certificate, issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Health, listed the underlying causes as “acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue.” Squamous cell carcinoma, also known as laryngeal cancer, is a type of cancer affecting the thin, flat cells that line the throat, including the larynx and pharynx.
Kilmer had publicly shared his struggle with throat cancer over a decade ago, undergoing emergency tracheotomies that permanently affected his speech. While the actor announced he had been cancer-free for four years in 2020, his death certificate confirms the recurrence of the disease. Additional contributing factors noted on the certificate include malnutrition and a “tracheocutaneous fistula,” an abnormal connection between the trachea and the skin, which can occur after the removal of a tracheostomy tube.
