Introduction to Development Projects in Tafraoute
Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch recently launched and presented a series of major development projects in the city of Tafraoute. These initiatives cover various sectors, including healthcare, urban renewal, infrastructure, social services, and sports facilities. The projects were introduced alongside Health and Social Protection Minister Amine Tehraoui, as part of a broader strategy aimed at improving the city’s attractiveness and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
Healthcare Development
Among the most significant projects is the construction of a new local hospital in Tafraoute, with an investment of nearly 177 million dirhams ($17.7 million), fully financed by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection. This hospital is expected to strengthen local health services, bring medical care closer to residents of Tafraoute and surrounding areas, and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances to larger medical centers.
Urban Renewal and Infrastructure
In the area of urban development, officials presented a 94 million dirham ($9.4 million) project to upgrade under-equipped neighborhoods. The initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Directorate General of Territorial Communities, the housing sector, and the Souss-Massa Regional Council. The project aims to improve urban landscapes, strengthen basic infrastructure, and ensure better living conditions for residents.
Additional infrastructure plans include redevelopment of the city’s western entrance at a cost of 15 million dirhams, expansion of municipal headquarters, and the creation of a communal campsite, all aimed at improving the city’s appearance and service capacity.
Economic Initiatives
On the economic front, authorities unveiled plans for a new weekly market with a budget of 15 million dirhams ($1.5 million), as well as a new municipal slaughterhouse project costing 5.5 million dirhams ($550,000). Officials said both projects are intended to improve health and safety standards while better organizing local commercial activities.
Environmental Projects
Environmental projects also featured prominently, including a controlled landfill and waste-sorting center with an investment of 15 million dirhams. The project is designed to modernize waste management systems, support sustainable development, and preserve the environmentally sensitive landscape that characterizes the Tafraoute region.
Supporting Local Economy and Crafts
To support the local economy and traditional crafts sector, officials allocated nearly 8.6 million dirhams ($860,000) for the creation and preparation of exhibition spaces and the rehabilitation of the traditional crafts market. The initiative seeks to improve the marketing of local products and provide stronger support for artisans.
Social Services and Education
On the social front, authorities highlighted the construction of a student boarding facility, known as Dar Talib, with a budget of 4.75 million dirhams ($475,000), aimed at supporting rural education and reducing school dropout rates.
Sports and Youth Development
Sports and youth development projects were also included, notably the construction of a municipal stadium costing 17 million dirhams ($1.7 million), a youth activity center, four neighborhood sports fields, and upgrades to the indoor sports hall. Officials said these projects are expected to expand access to sports and create new opportunities for young people in the region.
