Albury Friday: Your Race-by-Race Edge

The track is rated heavy 8, with the rail sitting perfectly true. Punters are set for a day of competitive racing, with several horses showing promising form and ideal conditions to perform.

Race 1: A Competitive Opener

The first race presents a strong chance for 5. Bonnie Murringo to continue her progressive run. Having tackled a significantly tougher Country Championship qualifier where she made up considerable ground, her current form is highly encouraging for this assignment. She typically settles back with cover, a tactic that should serve her well here. With a winning strike rate of 33 per cent from nine starts, including a victory on soft ground, she’s a genuine contender.

8. Warpainted also showed a closing effort in the same qualifier, coming from well back. 3. Samurai is looking to build on an upset BM 75 win at Canberra at his second start. 2. Ghost Walker could improve stepping up in distance for his third run, while 6. Light Foot, who contested the same Wagga qualifier as the top selection, and 9. Sweet Treats, dropping back from stronger metropolitan races, round out the main chances.

Our Tip: Back Bonnie Murringo to win.

Race 2: Consistent Mare Primed for Success

7. Think I Do stands out in the second race as a tough and consistent Canberra mare who appears ideally placed. She’s been in the placings in her last four starts, including a narrow defeat by just one length in a metropolitan BM 64 over 1900 metres. She then stepped up to this longer journey in a provincial BM 68 and again finished strongly into a place. She relishes rain-affected ground, and her jockey’s 1.5kg claim will help offset the weight increase.

6. Super Mirage benefits from a good draw and is a clear threat after finishing just behind the winner in his last two starts. Winkers are being used in place of blinkers. The rest of the field is headed by 2. Palace Green, who is looking for this longer trip at his third start, and 4. Untethered, stepping up from a dominant win in a weaker grade.

Our Tip: Back Think I Do to win.

Race 3: Improving Gelding to Go Back-to-Back

2. Ride The River is an improving four-year-old from the provincial circuit who looks capable of going back-to-back. He was narrowly beaten when resuming before leading all the way as a short-priced favourite against similar opposition at Kembla in heavy conditions. He’s a reliable weight carrier and should roll forward from his draw.

1. Hello Romeo is a significant watch, dropping back in class for a leading Victorian stable. 3. Tallingas Immortal possesses smart tactical speed and is chasing a third consecutive win after a five-week break. 6. Sizzleist, trained on the course, represents the best of the remaining chances.

Our Tip: Back Ride The River to win.

Race 4: Emerging Talent in the Mix

2. Borjnord, an emerging and talented metropolitan three-year-old, narrowly missed on debut at Newcastle. He’s drawn to stalk the speed again, and his chances are boosted with the scratching of a key market rival. 6. Tuscany, based in Randwick, is a big watch on his return after his first run since spring, following two trials. 10. Jasira is also first-up after a lengthy spell and two progressive trials, with blinkers applied. 4. Sacred Inferno is the next best, known to improve sharply second-up.

Our Tip: Back Borjnord to win.

Race 5: Promising Filly Resumes

10. Blue Monday, a lightly raced and promising filly, resumes for her third career start. She hit the line strongly on debut at Kembla last year before breaking through at Moruya, sweeping home from midfield on soft ground. She’s trialled well and, being by Sebring out of a Sebring mare, is bred to handle the conditions.

4. Sargeant Stan is a talented local with a wide draw but is building a solid record, with both career wins at this track. 6. Fourthtimelucky is an honest Victorian who has trialled since a narrow defeat in tougher company. 3. Marty McFly is another border-hopper coming off a third-up win in weaker races, while 7. Guru Two should appreciate the addition of blinkers.

Our Tip: Back Blue Monday to win.

Race 6: Local Guineas Contender

3. Autumn Break is a talented local mare who appears primed to claim the Guineas third-up, potentially taking her record to an impressive 66 per cent. She powered home to win both her starts at this track up to CL2 level before a spell. She was unlucky when resuming in a CL2 Highway at Randwick and again had a tough run from a wide draw in a deeper Country Championship qualifier at Wagga last start as a hot favourite, yet still managed to finish in the placings. With a better draw and her proven affinity for soft and heavy tracks, she’s a strong chance.

4. Jaegers is a progressive metropolitan filly dropping in grade. 1. Beyond Question returns after five weeks, having contested Group 3 company at his second start, finishing within three lengths of the winner. 2. Ethereum Girl, another Victorian raider, resumes after competing in the Group 1 Oaks at Flemington in the spring.

Our Tip: Back Autumn Break to win.

Race 7: Cup Contender on the Rise

2. Plymouth, a progressive Victorian stayer, is well-placed to win the Cup third-up, stepping up in distance and coming back in class. He won the Benalla Cup in early spring before a narrow Group 2 defeat over this trip. He then faced tough opposition in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup, finishing behind subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Half Yours. He resumed with a fair closing effort in Group 3 company and then ran on in a Group 2 over a mile. Drawn to get cover, he needs a clear run in the straight.

5. Bear On The Loose is a tough mare expected to lead for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable. She fought on well when resuming over the mile and was only collared late in metropolitan BM 88 company. She loves wet tracks and can give them all a run for their money. 4. Touristic is racing in career-best form, sweeping home from near last to win the Listed Canberra Cup. 1. Casino Seventeen drops back from deeper Group 2 company, and 8. Geemes charged home late in the Canberra Cup at big odds, boasting a 33 per cent winning strike rate from 12 starts.

Our Tip: Back Plymouth to win.

Race 8: Speedy Mare Set to Fire

2. Ticklebelly is a smart and speedy mare resuming for her first run since spring. She finished close-up in an Open Handicap for country sprinters at Randwick before claiming a feature country sprint. She then dropped out from the front in a competitive Federal sprint at Canberra and was spelled. She’s looked good in recent soft track trials and has a strong record when fresh, winning two of her four starts.

8. One Hard Lady is a promising locally trained mare resuming after a dominant trial win and remains unbeaten in two fresh runs. 6. Rumours Abound is another local with considerable ability, though inconsistent, but does come back from city racing. 1. Sparring, a stablemate of Rumours Abound, could peak third-up. 5. Iron Will gets blinkers back on for a six-day turnaround from provincial company, while 9. Brenlyn’s Legacy won four straight in this region late last year and resumes after five weeks.

Our Tip: Back Ticklebelly to win.
