All you need to know about Nolan’s The Odyssey: cast, release date, and why it matters

The Odyssey: A New Era of Blockbuster Cinema

Christopher Nolan is back with his latest project, The Odyssey, a film that promises to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2026. Following the massive success of Oppenheimer in 2023, which earned $975 million globally and won seven Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture, The Odyssey is already generating a lot of buzz.

Critics are predicting that this new film will surpass even the achievements of Oppenheimer. With an A-list cast and a unique approach to storytelling, it’s no wonder that experts are estimating that The Odyssey could gross over $1 billion worldwide.

Cast and Roles

Nolan has assembled a stellar cast for The Odyssey, featuring some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, who embarks on a treacherous journey home after a decade spent fighting the Trojan War. This marks Damon’s third collaboration with Nolan, following Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023).

Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope, Odysseus’ loyal wife, holding down the fort in Ithaca. She has also worked with Nolan twice before, on The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Interstellar (2014). Hathaway has praised Nolan for giving her opportunities during a difficult time in her career.

Tom Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope. He described the film as his “proudest achievement as an actor” and thanked Nolan for the opportunity.

Robert Pattinson stars as Antinous, an arrogant suitor vying for Penelope’s hand. Zendaya appears as Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare. Charlize Theron plays Calypso, a nymph who resides on the island of Ogygia.

Other major stars include Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, and Travis Scott.

The Story of The Odyssey

Based on the ancient Greek poem attributed to Homer, The Odyssey tells the mythological story surrounding the aftermath of the Trojan War. The film is said to be told through a non-linear structure, with Nolan explaining that the original poem starts halfway through the story.

It is expected to follow a dual narrative structure, flipping between Odysseus’ journey home and Telemachus’ battle to protect his father’s throne. The film will focus on the family’s emotional journey, encountering several mythical creatures from cyclopses and sirens to gods and enchantresses.

Runtime and Production

Nolan isn’t known to shy away from a long runtime, with The Odyssey reportedly falling just short of three hours. The film is also reported to be the first to be shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film cameras, providing a full 180-degree field of view and immersing audiences in the story.

Release Date

The Odyssey is set to hit Australian cinemas on July 16, 2026. Tickets for the film first went on sale exactly one year ahead of its release date on July 16, 2025. IMAX released tickets to the 26 cinemas around the world with the staff and equipment to show the film in its full 1570 format.

According to The Guardian, the day after tickets went on sale, IMAX Melbourne had already sold 1,800 tickets across its four available screenings.
