A Story of Love, Resemblance, and Life’s Surprises
Imagine this scenario: you’re in a long-term relationship with someone you care about deeply. However, your visions for the future don’t align — you want children, but they’re not ready. You make the difficult decision to break up, only to discover that your ex has moved on and is now dating someone who looks exactly like you. How would you react? Would you feel betrayed, flattered, or a mix of both?
This was the reality for actress Amanda Peet, who found herself in a situation that many would find hard to believe. Her then-boyfriend, David Benioff, a producer and writer best known for co-creating Game of Thrones, was not yet ready to start a family. In 2003, Peet, who had recently starred in Something’s Gotta Give, decided to end their relationship, feeling the pressure of her own biological clock.
During the nine-month breakup period, Peet shared an unusual experience on Dax Shepherd’s Armchair Expert podcast. She explained that she often got mistaken for Lake Bell, an actress seven years younger, who was starring in Boston Legal at the time. This misidentification was so frequent that it became almost second nature.
Peet recounted a specific incident where she was at a restaurant with friends, trying to lift her spirits after the breakup. It was a crowded bar on Venice Boulevard, and as she sat there, someone across the room called out, “Lake, Lake, Lake!” She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. The moment came just 24 hours after she learned that Benioff was dating Bell.

The uncanny resemblance between Peet and Bell even inspired a scene in the 2021 movie Fantasy Life. In the film, Peet plays a struggling actress who is approached by a fan for an autograph, only to discover that the fan believes she is in Bless This Mess, a TV show that starred Bell — and Dax Shepherd.
Shepherd even left a message on Bell’s phone asking if she had ever been mistaken for Peet, though the podcast ended before Bell could respond.
As for Peet and Benioff, their story took a different turn. They eventually married in 2006 and now have three children together. This suggests that sometimes, the original is simply unmatched, and people often have their own preferences when it comes to relationships.

While this story is unique, it’s not the only one of its kind. There are countless examples of celebrities who have dated partners who look strikingly similar to previous girlfriends or boyfriends. For instance, John F. Kennedy Jr. went from Daryl Hannah to Carolyn Bessette, and Channing Tatum dated Jessie J shortly after his split with Jenna Dewan. Even Kanye West’s wife, Bianca Censori, bears a strong resemblance to Kim Kardashian.
These stories highlight how people can be drawn to certain traits or appearances, sometimes without realizing it. Whether it’s a coincidence or a pattern, it’s fascinating to see how these connections play out in real life.
