Arsenal’s Defensive Doubts Eased Ahead of Wolves Clash
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has offered a significant boost to the Gunners’ faithful, allaying fears of another defensive injury crisis. With an important midweek fixture against Wolves on the horizon, the news that both Riccardo Calafiori and Ben White are expected to be available for selection is a welcome relief for the North London club.
The recent FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic saw a late scare for the Gunners. Left-back Riccardo Calafiori was a last-minute withdrawal from the starting lineup, just moments before kick-off, due to an unspecified knock. This forced a reshuffling of the team, with Bukayo Saka being promoted from the substitutes’ bench to fill the void.
Adding to the concern, right-back Ben White also required attention during the second half of the same match. He pulled up with an issue and, after receiving treatment on the field, was seen leaving the pitch with a physio. Both players have experienced disrupted campaigns this season due to various fitness setbacks, making these latest concerns particularly worrying for Arsenal.
However, Arteta was quick to provide a positive update on the duo. “Riccardo is fine,” the manager confirmed. “He was training with us today, he is feeling better and hopefully he is fit for tomorrow. Ben was just a bit of fatigue; obviously, he did a lot in the game and by the end of it, he was feeling a bit of tightness in the hamstring, but he is fine.”

A Season of Stretched Squads
This season has seen Arsenal grapple with an unusually extensive injury list, and Sunday’s FA Cup fixture was no exception. Beyond the defensive concerns, Kai Havertz and captain Martin Odegaard were notable absentees. They joined a growing list of players who have faced time on the sidelines, including the likes of Max Dowman and Mikel Merino.
While Odegaard is reportedly nearing a return from a knee problem and is a contender to feature in the crucial North London derby this weekend, Arteta indicated that the trip to Molineux would come too soon for him. The same timeframe applies to Kai Havertz.
Arteta elaborated on the availability of his key midfielders: “For Wolves, he [Odegaard] is not going to be fit, but for Sunday, we are very hopeful he can be with us. Kai is another one where the weekend is a possibility.”
Investigating the Injury Bug
The persistent nature of injuries within the Arsenal squad this season has not gone unnoticed by Arteta. He has openly admitted that the club is actively investigating the reasons behind the high prevalence of fitness issues.
“Yeah, big time,” Arteta responded when asked if the club was looking into the matter. He reflected on the nature of the injuries, noting their varied causes. “The first one was with Willi (Saliba) when he rolled his ankle against Liverpool. Then we had two incidents with Richy (Calafiori) in the warm-up in a really similar way. And the other one was with Bukayo (Saka), after he was rested in midweek and didn’t play against Kairat, then against Leeds.”
Arteta expressed his surprise at the unusual pattern of these incidents. “It’s very unusual,” he stated. “It probably happened once or twice, I think, in six years that I’ve been here, and now it happened four times (this season). Obviously, we are looking into it… we have to learn.”
The manager’s commitment to understanding and mitigating these injury concerns underscores the club’s dedication to ensuring player welfare and maintaining squad depth throughout the demanding Premier League campaign. The return of key defensive players will be a welcome sight for Arsenal fans as they look to secure positive results in their upcoming fixtures.
