Nigeria’s Rising Tennis Stars Shine at Tennista Foundation Junior Tournament

Nigeria’s emerging tennis stars, Atilola Mofifun and Zara Adegoke, made headlines as they claimed victory in the U-16 and U-12 categories respectively at the second edition of the Tennista Foundation Junior Tennis Tournament. The event took place at the Lagos Country Club in Ikeja, where young athletes from across the country showcased their talents over a three-day competition.

The tournament was played on clay courts, offering participants an opportunity to gain experience on a surface that is not commonly used in many local tournaments. This unique setup provided a valuable learning experience for the players, especially those who were competing on clay for the first time.

In the girls’ U-12 category, Zara Adegoke emerged victorious by defeating Akpan Mercy with scores of 4-1 and 4-2. Meanwhile, in the boys’ U-12 division, Mohammed Naseer secured a win against Awi Rafael with scores of 5-3 and 4-2.

The boys’ U-16 category saw Afaramai Heman triumph over Aluko Nathaniel with a final score of 4-2 and 4-2, marking another impressive performance by the young athletes.

Improvements and Growing Participation

Speaking after the event, the President of the Tennista Foundation, Michael Nwoseh, highlighted several improvements in this year’s tournament. He noted increased participation and better infrastructure, which contributed to a more competitive environment. Over 60 players competed across male and female categories, with the introduction of the U-12 division creating more opportunities for younger athletes.

Nwoseh pointed to growing corporate sponsorship and improved court arrangements as indicators of rising standards. He expressed confidence that the competition would continue to expand in the future.

“We’re excited to host this second edition. It’s an all-clay event this time, and the players competed at a very high level. For some of the young athletes, this was their first time playing on clay, and we are pleased they gained valuable competitive experience through our foundation. This exposure will help them strengthen their game and improve their ability to compete across different surfaces,” he said.

Young Champions and Their Journey

Atilola Mofifun, the U-16 champion, expressed her delight at her victory. She noted that she focused on enjoying her game rather than chasing points. Winning the trophy, educational prizes, and other rewards made her proud, especially after missing out the previous year.

The young champion also appreciated the organizers for providing a platform that motivates children to compete and build confidence. She added that the rewards, including a new racket, would further boost her development.

Support from Sports Authorities

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, represented by Oriyomi Oluwasanmi, emphasized the importance of sports in youth development. He noted that tournaments like this help nurture well-rounded individuals while reducing social vices among young people.

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting such initiatives, describing them as vital platforms for talent discovery ahead of national competitions, including the upcoming Under-18 National Sports Games to be hosted by Lagos.

He also urged both winners and participants to remain dedicated, stressing that consistent training and discipline are key to future success.

Prizes and Recognition

The winners received prizes, including educational grants, brand-new tennis rackets, school bags, and other gifts from sponsors. These rewards not only recognized the athletes’ achievements but also provided them with resources to continue their development in the sport.

Conclusion

The Tennista Foundation Junior Tennis Tournament continues to play a crucial role in identifying and nurturing young talent in Nigeria. With each edition, the event grows in scale and impact, offering participants a platform to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience. As the sport continues to evolve, events like these will be essential in shaping the future of Nigerian tennis.
