Generosity Galore: GoFundMe for Struggling DoorDash Driver Surpasses $500,000
A heartwarming act of kindness has captured the attention of thousands, with a GoFundMe campaign launched for an elderly DoorDash driver in Tennessee skyrocketing to over $510,000. Brittany Smith of Manchester, Tennessee, initiated the fundraiser after witnessing the 78-year-old driver, identified only as Richard, struggling to navigate her stairs while making a delivery. The campaign, aptly titled “Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again,” has seen an “overwhelming” response, leaving Smith, the organiser, in awe.
“I had no idea that I was going to gain that much traction,” Smith told The Independent, expressing her astonishment at the immense public support. She stated that she would “do it over again in a heartbeat” and hopes the substantial funds will allow Richard to finally retire and enjoy some much-needed rest. Reportedly, Richard has been unable to sleep due to the constant notifications from the GoFundMe page.
The genesis of this remarkable story occurred earlier this week when Smith’s daughter received a Starbucks delivery. Initially, Smith was a little miffed, as her daughter’s father, who is a quadriplegic and often has items delivered due to his condition, had ordered Starbucks for the child for the third time that week.
“I was actually mad about it, because he often orders Starbucks for her, but we try to do it as more of a reward, and this was the third time he had ordered for her in the week,” Smith explained. “So, I see the Ring doorbell go off, and I’m like, you’ve got to be kidding me, he had Starbucks sent again.”
Upon checking her Ring doorbell footage, Smith was confronted with the sight of a “little old man walking up the steps.”
“This poor guy is struggling to get up my stairs to deliver my very capable daughter her Starbucks,” she said. The short, 20-second clip vividly captured the elderly driver, clad in a red shirt and khakis, gripping the handrail for support as he ascended the small flight of stairs to place the delivery at the front door.

Moved by the sight, Smith asked her daughter’s father to increase the tip through the app, but he was unable to do so. This led Smith to seek help via social media, initially just hoping to identify the driver.
“I posted the video literally just looking for this man’s name,” she recalled.
A Community Rallies for Richard
Fortunately, a Facebook user recognised Richard from previous deliveries to their office and provided his full name to Smith. Smith, respecting Richard’s privacy and his request to withhold his last name, was able to locate his address. A quick verification of his vehicle confirmed it was indeed him. When Smith approached his home and offered him a $200 tip, Richard’s immediate concern was for her well-being.
“Before he accepted the money … he wanted to make sure that I was going to be OK if he accepted that money from me,” Smith shared.
Richard then revealed the circumstances that led him to take up delivery work. His wife had lost her job through no fault of her own, and her medication was “very expensive.” After covering essential expenses, the couple found themselves with insufficient funds, prompting Richard to turn to DoorDash to supplement their income.

Upon returning home, Smith discovered that the video had gone viral on TikTok, with an outpouring of online comments expressing a desire to help. This surge of support inspired her to launch the GoFundMe campaign the following morning. Her phone, she says, “has not stopped buzzing” ever since.
A spokesperson for GoFundMe confirmed that the platform is “working directly with the fundraiser organizer to help ensure all funds safely reach the beneficiary.” By Thursday evening, over 12,000 individuals had contributed to the fund.
“He’s more precious in person, so I’m glad that I got to meet him,” Smith said, reflecting on her encounter with Richard.
DoorDash and the Gig Economy
DoorDash, the food delivery service, operates by connecting customers with independent contractors who deliver food and other items. To become a driver, individuals must be at least 18 years old, possess a vehicle, and provide valid identification.
The company has been contacted for comment regarding Richard’s situation.
The overwhelming success of this GoFundMe campaign highlights the power of social media and community spirit in addressing individual hardship. It serves as a powerful reminder that even seemingly small acts of kindness can ignite a wave of generosity, transforming lives and offering a much-needed chance for rest and security. The story of Richard and Brittany Smith is a testament to the good that exists in the world and the profound impact that empathy can have.
