Blockbuster Trailers Light Up Super Bowl LX: A Glimpse of What’s to Come
Super Bowl LX wasn’t just about gridiron glory; it was also a prime-time showcase for Hollywood’s biggest upcoming releases. While some major studios opted for a more subdued presence this year, opting not to unveil fresh footage, Disney seized the opportunity to tease eagerly awaited cinematic adventures.
The Mandalorian Returns to the Big Screen
Fans of the critically acclaimed Disney+ series The Mandalorian were treated to a tantalising glimpse of its transition to the silver screen. The upcoming theatrical sequel, which continues the saga of bounty hunter Din Djarin and his adorable, force-sensitive ward Grogu, received a 36-second teaser trailer. The spot depicted Djarin and Grogu traversing a stark, snowy landscape, underscored by a dramatic voiceover characteristic of iconic Super Bowl commercials.

This cinematic outing promises the return of Jon Favreau, the creative force behind the series, who will direct and produce. He’ll be joined by Lucasfilm’s chief content officer, Dave Filoni, and former president Kathleen Kennedy, both serving as producers. The Mandalorian’s cinematic journey is slated to hit theatres on May 22nd.
A Cosmic Leap for Mario and Friends
Universal Studios also made its mark with a brief, yet exciting, teaser for the next instalment of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This 15-second preview offered a charming glimpse of baby Mario and Luigi rousing a dinosaur, only to be plunged into a frantic escape alongside beloved characters Toad and Yoshi.
The upcoming film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, will see the return of Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi. The dynamic duo are set to embark on an intergalactic adventure, promising a visually stunning and action-packed experience for fans of the iconic video game franchise. In the UK, audiences can catch this animated spectacle in cinemas from April 1st.
Extraterrestrial Encounters and Interstellar Journeys
Beyond the established franchises, Super Bowl viewers were also given an extended look at Stephen Spielberg’s highly anticipated UFO film, Disclosure Day. The minute-long trailer provided a compelling snapshot of humanity’s first contact with alien life, hinting at a grand narrative of global significance. Starring acclaimed British actors Emily Blunt and Colin Firth, Disclosure Day is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 12th.
Ryan Gosling’s Sci-Fi Odyssey
Sci-fi enthusiasts were further delighted by an almost three-minute trailer for Ryan Gosling’s next venture, Project Hail Mary. Directed by the creative minds behind The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the trailer showcases Gosling as an astronaut tasked with the monumental challenge of communicating with a small, rock-like alien. This ambitious project is set to land in theatres on March 20th.
A Surprise from David Fincher
Netflix concluded the major trailer reveals with an unexpected offering: director David Fincher’s follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the trailer features Brad Pitt reprising his role as the titular character, with Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki also making a prominent appearance. While the trailer concluded with a “Coming Soon” message, an official release date has yet to be announced.
The Super Bowl itself saw the Seattle Seahawks emerge victorious, defeating the New England Patriots with a final score of 29-13 in Santa Clara, California. The game, as always, provided a thrilling backdrop for these cinematic previews, leaving audiences across the globe buzzing with anticipation for the year’s most exciting film releases.
