Banchero Shines with 23 Points as Magic End Home Postseason Drought

DETROIT — In a thrilling Game 1 of their first-round NBA playoff series, the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic delivered a strong performance to secure a 112-101 victory over the top-seeded Detroit Pistons. This win not only marked a significant moment for the Magic but also extended the Pistons’ longest home playoff losing streak in NBA history.

The Pistons have now endured an 11-game home playoff losing streak, a run that began back in 2008. Despite this, they will have another opportunity to turn things around when they face the Magic again on Wednesday night in Game 2.

Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with a playoff career-high 39 points, while Tobias Harris contributed 17 points. However, the rest of the team struggled offensively, failing to match the intensity and execution displayed by the Magic.

Paolo Banchero was the standout performer for Orlando, finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. His leadership was crucial as the Magic never trailed throughout the game. Franz Wagner played a key role in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 of his 19 points during that period to help seal the victory.

Desmond Bane and Wendell Carter each added 17 points, while Jalen Suggs chipped in with 16. The Magic’s balanced scoring and defensive efforts proved too much for the Pistons, who were unable to maintain consistency throughout the game.

The Pistons have not advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs in 18 years, while the Magic have not made it past the first round since 2010. This matchup highlighted the stark contrast between the two teams’ recent playoff performances.

Orlando came into the game with confidence, having defeated Charlotte in a play-in game just days earlier. They started strong, taking a 18-5 lead in the first quarter after holding the Pistons to just 1-of-6 shooting and forcing four turnovers. The Magic’s early dominance set the tone for the rest of the game.

Detroit showed signs of rust in the opening minutes, but they eventually rallied to cut the deficit to two points. However, Orlando closed the first half with six straight points, taking a 35-27 lead. Banchero and Suggs combined for 20 points in that stretch, showcasing their ability to step up in critical moments.

The Magic maintained their lead through halftime, entering the second half with a 55-51 advantage. The Pistons, however, struggled to find their rhythm in the third quarter. Orlando capitalized on Detroit’s lack of energy, scoring eight of the first nine points and forcing coach J.B. Bickerstaff to call a timeout.

Detroit responded with a 10-point run, including 13 of 15 shots, to tie the game at 65-65 on Cunningham’s three-pointer. Banchero quickly answered with a long jumper over Jalen Duren, and Bane followed with a three-pointer over Cunningham, helping the Magic regain control.

Orlando carried a 81-74 lead into the final quarter, where they continued to dominate. Their strong performance throughout the game ultimately secured the victory, setting the stage for a highly anticipated Game 2.
