Bellamy Rips ‘Ridiculous’ Commentary: Madge Responds to Tallis

Broncos Coach Backs Injured Skipper Amidst Media Storm

Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has thrown his full support behind injured captain Adam Reynolds, expressing confidence that the veteran playmaker will be fit to take the field next week. Maguire also firmly dismissed recent criticisms from club legend Gorden Tallis, labelling the commentary as unfounded and distracting from the team’s focus.

In a show of solidarity, Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has also weighed in on the ongoing saga, calling the notion of Maguire being under pressure just months after leading the Broncos to a premiership “ridiculous.” The Broncos, currently winless after two rounds, are set to face the Storm in Melbourne on Friday night, a match that will test their resolve as they aim to secure their first victory of the season and defend their title.

Tallis has been a vocal critic of the Broncos leading up to the AAMI Park clash, particularly targeting Adam Reynolds. The former Bronco has publicly questioned the management of Reynolds’ rib injury and his subsequent withdrawal from the match against the Storm. Tallis went as far as to suggest that Reynolds’ attendance at a post-match press conference following Brisbane’s loss to Parramatta, and his subsequent trip to Sydney for a media commitment, demonstrated unprofessionalism and poor leadership.

These latest comments from Tallis are an extension of a prolonged period of criticism directed at Michael Maguire, with the club legend frequently questioning the coach’s training methods.

When questioned on Thursday about the impact of Tallis’ relentless criticism on himself and the club, Maguire was resolute. “No. Not at all. No,” he stated to reporters in Melbourne. “At the end of the day, I look after my players and the captain, and that’s my viewpoint, and everyone else’s viewpoint, too. So our big focus is what we’re doing tomorrow. That’s the most important thing for where we are.”

Bellamy Defends Maguire Amidst “Ridiculous” Pressure Claims

Storm coach Craig Bellamy, speaking at his own press conference on Thursday, was asked for his thoughts on the barbs being directed at Maguire. His response was swift and unequivocal. “I wouldn’t have a clue [about what’s being said], and I would find it hard to believe that a guy that was the coach of a grand final-winning side six months ago would be under pressure. That’s ridiculous,” Bellamy commented. “So, anyway, that’s my opinion.”

Maguire himself was asked if he also considered the criticism to be ridiculous, but he chose to deflect the question, indicating his disinterest in the external noise. “To be honest, I don’t pay too much attention, as much as people say,” the Broncos coach revealed. “It’s more around what we’re trying to build here. I’m really enjoying coaching this group because we’re trying to build something there that can have sustained success, and each week’s another challenge. This is no different, so the boys will go about what they need to [do]. And I’m very proud of them, the way they go about their training and what they’re trying to build here. So I think that’s the most important thing for me.”

Reynolds’ Injury Update and Team Changes

Adam Reynolds was initially named at halfback when the Broncos released their squad on Tuesday afternoon. However, news emerged just hours later that he would not be fit to play against the Storm. This means Ben Hunt will step into the halfback role, partnering five-eighth Ezra Mam in the halves. Blake Mozer has been added to the bench for the grand final rematch against Melbourne.

Regarding Reynolds’ fitness, Maguire elaborated on the situation. “Look, I actually thought he [Reynolds] was gonna be able to play [against Melbourne], but he unfortunately just couldn’t make the trip down,” Maguire explained. “But he’ll be right next week. Well, I think he will be,” he added with a chuckle, reinforcing his belief in the captain’s swift recovery.

The Broncos will be looking to their experienced players and emerging talents to secure a crucial victory against a formidable Storm outfit, as they navigate the early stages of their premiership defence. The focus remains firmly on the field and the team’s performance, with external commentary being firmly put aside.
