Big shift! BCB reaches out to BCCI ahead of India’s 2026 tour

Strengthening Cricket Ties Between Bangladesh and India

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken a significant step towards enhancing its relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This move comes as part of an ongoing effort to explore further cricket-related collaborations between the two nations. Nazmul Abedin Fahim, Director (Cricket Operations) of the BCB, highlighted that the communication was initiated through a formal letter sent via email, as part of the board’s regular interactions with international cricket authorities.

“We maintain regular communication with various countries’ cricket boards,” said Fahim. “As part of that regular communication, we recently reached out to the BCCI via a letter to establish contact and discuss potential future engagements.”

In the letter, the BCB mentioned the upcoming visit of the Indian national cricket team to Bangladesh in September 2026 for a white-ball series comprising three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Following this, the Bangladesh women’s team is expected to travel to India for a similar series. The BCB also expressed interest in exploring other opportunities for reciprocal cricket collaborations.

Rebuilding Relations After Past Tensions

This renewed focus on collaboration follows a period of tension between the two cricket boards. A notable incident occurred when the Kolkata Knight Riders had to release Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman due to political pressures from local groups after he was signed for the 2026 season. This situation created friction between the BCB and the BCCI, which was further heightened when Bangladesh decided to boycott the T20 World Cup hosted in India.

However, with the recent change in leadership following the February 12 elections, both boards seem to be working towards improving diplomatic relations. This shift is evident in the efforts of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, who recently visited India from April 7 to 8 as part of broader initiatives to strengthen bilateral ties.

Upcoming Tour Schedule

The Indian cricket team is set to tour Bangladesh for a white-ball series in September 2026. Originally scheduled for August 2025, the tour was postponed due to security and scheduling challenges. Both the BCB and BCCI are now working to finalize the exact dates and venues.

Here is the tentative schedule:

  • September 1 – 1st ODI – Mirpur
  • September 3 – 2nd ODI – Mirpur
  • September 6 – 3rd ODI – Chattogram
  • September 9 – 1st T20I – Chattogram
  • September 12 – 2nd T20I – Mirpur
  • September 13 – 3rd T20I – Mirpur

This tour is expected to provide a platform for both teams to engage in competitive cricket while also fostering stronger ties between the two nations.

Future Collaborations

Beyond the current tour, the BCB is keen on exploring additional opportunities for mutual growth in cricket. This includes potential tours for the women’s teams, youth development programs, and joint training initiatives. The BCB’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to building long-term relationships with international cricket bodies.

With the new administration in Bangladesh showing a willingness to engage more closely with India, there is optimism that these efforts will lead to a more cooperative and harmonious relationship between the two cricket boards. The upcoming series in September is just the beginning of what could be a new chapter in Bangladesh-India cricket relations.
