Boston Marathon 2026 Preview: Can Korir and Lokedi Repeat?

The 130th Boston Marathon Kicks Off with a Star-Studded Field

The 130th edition of the Boston Marathon is set to take place on Monday, bringing together some of the most elite runners from around the world. This year’s race promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, with several returning champions and rising stars vying for glory.

Returning Champions and Strong Contenders

Last year’s winners, Sharon Lokedi and John Korir, are both expected to return, aiming for back-to-back victories in the women’s and men’s races, respectively. Lokedi made history by setting a course record last year with a time of 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 22 seconds. She will be looking to improve on that performance, with fellow Kenyan athletes Irine Cheptai and Loice Chemnung also in contention. Ethiopian runners Workenesh Edesa and Bedatu Hirpa, who have strong personal bests, are also expected to challenge for the top spots.

On the American side, Emily Sisson stands out as the runner with the best chance to make an impact. She is the most recent American woman to finish in the top three of a major marathon, achieving second place at the Chicago Marathon in 2022 with an American record time of 2:18:29. This will be her first time competing in the Boston Marathon.

Notable Absences and Shifts in Strategy

Some top contenders have chosen to compete in Sunday’s London Marathon instead of Boston. Among them is Hellen Obiri, who won the 2025 New York Marathon and finished second behind Lokedi in Boston last year. Her absence may open the door for other runners to make a stronger push for the title.

Men’s Race: A Battle for Glory

On the men’s side, John Korir is looking to defend his title after winning last year with a time of 2:04:45. He has the experience and the speed to make it happen, especially with fellow Kenyan Benson Kipruto, who also has a personal best under 2 hours and 3 minutes. Tanzanian runner Alphonce Felix Simbu and Kenyan Cyprian Kotut, who tied for second in last year’s race, are also set to compete again this year.

American runner Conner Mantz, who placed fourth in last year’s Boston Marathon, pulled out of the race last month. This leaves Galen Rupp as the top American hope for a strong performance. Rupp was the last American to finish in the top three of a major marathon, placing third in Chicago in 2021.

Race Details and Schedule

The Boston Marathon will start at 9 a.m. ET and run throughout the day. The women’s race will go first, followed by the men’s competition. With such a high level of talent and excitement, this year’s event is sure to be a thrilling showcase of endurance, skill, and determination.
