A Remarkable Moment for Luka Jovanovic
Adelaide United striker Luka Jovanovic is still coming to terms with one of the most intense and unforgettable moments in his young career. In a single, chaotic minute during Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Melbourne City, Jovanovic managed to secure a match-winning goal, claim the Golden Boot, and qualify for a home semi-final—only to be sent off in the same moment.
Jovanovic was thrilled with his decisive strike in the 98th minute, which not only secured the win but also ensured Adelaide United finished in second place and earned a home semi-final. However, the celebration that followed came at a cost. After being booked in a heated melee, Jovanovic removed his shirt in joy, leading to a red card just 60 seconds later. This means he will miss the first semi-final match for the Reds.
“I didn’t realize what had happened at the time,” Jovanovic said on Monday. “I thought I had received a yellow card and … I don’t think it was worth it. I wish I could play the next game, but I know the boys will do the job.”
The 20-year-old has been instrumental in Adelaide United’s success this season, with his consistent goal-scoring helping the team climb to second place. Despite the setback, Jovanovic remains focused on the bigger picture and is confident in his teammates’ ability to carry the team forward.
The Aftermath of the Celebration
Jovanovic’s goal was his 11th of the season, earning him shared Golden Boot honors with Auckland’s Sam Cosgrove. However, the immediate consequences of his actions have not fully sunk in yet.
“I picked my shirt back up and started walking to the halfway line,” he recalled. “Then I heard the referee call my name and saw him holding a red card. I was like: ‘Oh, my God.'”

While Jovanovic acknowledges the mistake, he expects some backlash from his teammates and coaches for his red card. He admitted that the team is still celebrating the win and hasn’t yet given him any criticism.
“Not yet — the boys are still buzzing,” he said. “Maybe next week they will give me some comments. I haven’t spoken to (coach) Airton (Andriolli) about it yet. He will probably have a chat with me next week about it.”
Despite the controversy, Jovanovic remains positive and focused on the future. His performance this season has been nothing short of impressive, and his determination to bounce back from this setback shows his character and commitment to the team. As the Reds prepare for their semi-final journey, all eyes will be on how they handle this challenge without their star striker.
