A Mad Minute for Luka Jovanovic
Adelaide United striker Luka Jovanovic is still coming to terms with one of the most dramatic moments in his young career. In a single, chaotic minute during Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Melbourne City, he managed to achieve a match-winner, shared Golden Boot honours, and secured a home semi-final for the Reds—only to be sent off in the process.
Jovanovic was thrilled with his 98th-minute goal, which proved to be the decisive moment in the match. The strike not only secured the win but also ensured Adelaide finished in second place, earning them a home semi-final. However, the celebration that followed was anything but simple.
After scoring, Jovanovic ripped off his shirt in excitement, an action that came just 60 seconds after he had been booked during a heated melee on the pitch. The referee, seeing the incident, issued a red card, ruling him out of the upcoming semi-final.
“I didn’t know in the moment,” Jovanovic said on Monday. “I thought straight away that I got a yellow card and… nah, I don’t think it was worth it. I wish I could play the next game but I know the boys will do the job.”
The 20-year-old, who has been instrumental in Adelaide United’s rise to second place, admitted that the reality of his actions didn’t hit him immediately.
“I picked my shirt back up and I started walking to the halfway line,” he said. “And then I heard the ref call my name and I saw him holding a red card and I was like: ‘Oh, my God’.”

Jovanovic’s goal was his 11th of the season, earning him shared Golden Boot honours with Auckland’s Sam Cosgrove. Despite this achievement, he is fully aware of the backlash he may face from teammates and coaches for his red card.
“Not yet – the boys are still buzzing,” he said. “Maybe next week they will give me some comments. I haven’t spoken to (coach) Airton (Andriolli) about it yet. He will probably have a chat with me next week about it.”
