Brainy Blokes Bail on the Right: New Study

A comprehensive, multi-decade study has unveiled intriguing insights into the political leanings of individuals with varying levels of intelligence, suggesting a notable divergence in conservatism between men of average intelligence and their gifted counterparts. The research, titled “Exploring exceptional minds: Political orientations of gifted adults,” was spearheaded by Maximilian Krolo, Jörn R. Sparfeldt, and Detlef H. Rost, aiming to pinpoint distinct political patterns when comparing gifted adults against a control group possessing average intelligence.

The ambitious study commenced by administering standardised intelligence tests to over 7,000 third-grade students. These assessments were designed to measure reasoning capabilities and the speed at which information was processed. From this extensive pool, a group of gifted students, defined by an IQ of 130 or higher, was identified. A control group of students who did not meet this gifted threshold was also established.

To ensure the accuracy and consistency of the initial findings, the participants were re-tested six years later, during their ninth-grade year. This second round of testing served to confirm their IQ levels and mitigate the possibility of any anomalous results from the initial assessment. Then, approximately 35 years after their initial identification, researchers reached out to these individuals via surveys to gauge their political orientations.

Key Findings: A Gendered Divide in Conservatism

The study’s results revealed a significant difference in political outlook specifically among the male participants.

  • Non-gifted men consistently scored higher on measures of conservatism when compared to gifted men. This group was more inclined to embrace values associated with tradition and a strictly ordered social hierarchy.
  • Gifted men, conversely, demonstrated a reduced likelihood of adhering to these traditional conservative viewpoints.

Interestingly, this pronounced divergence was not observed among the female participants. Both gifted and non-gifted women exhibited similar, relatively lower levels of conservatism. The research team highlighted that this particular difference in political orientation was unique to the male participants in the study.

Cognitive Flexibility as a Potential Explainer

The researchers put forth an interpretation of these findings through the lens of cognitive flexibility. They theorise that men with average intelligence might lean more heavily on established traditional perspectives when navigating and understanding complex social issues. This reliance on ingrained norms could, in turn, contribute to their higher scores in conservatism.

In contrast, gifted men are believed to possess a greater degree of cognitive flexibility. This enhanced ability may allow them to more readily process and integrate a wider array of diverse viewpoints and perspectives. As a result, they may find themselves less constrained by rigid adherence to traditional norms.

While gifted adults, in general, appear to exhibit a political diversity and moderation comparable to the broader population, the study flags the “one notable exception” – the pronounced preference for conservatism among non-gifted men – as an area warranting further in-depth investigation.

Limitations and Future Directions

It is important to acknowledge the methodology employed in this study. The reliance on self-reported beliefs gathered through surveys means that the findings are contingent on the honesty and self-awareness of the respondents. While the researchers assume truthful reporting, they concede that individuals might, at times, present themselves in a manner that differs from their actual actions or deeply held, albeit perhaps unarticulated, beliefs. This inherent limitation suggests that while the survey data provides valuable indications, it may not be a perfect reflection of every participant’s complete political identity. Future research could explore alternative methodologies to corroborate or further refine these findings.
