Brisbane Broncos Face More Setbacks as Key Player Injured
Brisbane Broncos forward Brendan Piakura is set to miss at least a month due to a knee injury, marking another blow for the club’s already struggling squad. The Broncos have been hit hard by injuries in recent weeks, with several players forced to play through pain and others sidelined for extended periods.
Piakura suffered an injury to the lateral compartment of his left knee, according to scans conducted at the Clive Berghofer Centre’s Qscan facility. The club has not yet confirmed a return timeline, but it is understood that he will need to see a surgeon before any definitive plans can be made. As a result, Piakura will miss Saturday night’s game against the Roosters.
This latest injury adds to the Broncos’ growing list of challenges. Last Tuesday, the team struggled to name 22 players, and during their recent match against the Canterbury Bulldogs, Kotoni Staggs and Deine Mariner were forced to play despite injuries. Now, with Piakura out, the club is facing an even tougher road ahead.
Despite the setbacks, there are some positive developments. Patrick Carrigan is expected to return this week after serving a suspension, and the club is hopeful that Jesse Arthars and Reece Walsh will also make a comeback from their respective injuries. However, the loss of Piakura and Preston Riki, who is suspended for the upcoming game, creates a significant gap in the second row.
Michael Maguire, the Broncos’ coach, now faces a difficult decision on how to fill the void left by Piakura and Riki. Jordan Riki will start on one side of the park, but the identity of his partner remains uncertain. Potential options include Jack Gosiewski moving from prop to second-row, while Carrigan’s return could see Xavier Willison shift from lock to prop alongside Ben Talty.
The situation is further complicated by the absence of Payne Haas and Corey Jensen, both of whom are sidelined. This means the Broncos will need to bring in a fresh face on the bench, potentially leading to a more outside back-heavy lineup if Arthars and Walsh return. This could push Hayze Perham and either Josiah Karapani or Gehamat Shibasaki out of the starting side.
With so many challenges on the horizon, the Broncos will need to rely on their depth and adaptability to navigate the upcoming games. The club’s ability to manage its injury crisis will be crucial in determining its performance in the coming weeks.
