Brisbane Broncos Face More Setbacks with Piakura’s Injury
The Brisbane Broncos are facing another blow as forward Brendan Piakura is likely to miss at least a month due to a knee injury. This latest setback adds to the club’s growing list of injuries, which has already left them struggling to field a full team.
Piakura suffered an injury to the lateral compartment of his left knee, according to scans conducted at the Clive Berghofer Centre’s Qscan facility. The club has not yet confirmed a return timeline, as Piakura will need to see a surgeon to determine the extent of the damage and the best course of treatment. As a result, he will be unavailable for the upcoming match against the Roosters on Saturday night.
This news comes as the Broncos continue to deal with a significant number of injuries. Last Tuesday, they were unable to name 22 players, highlighting the severity of their current situation. In a recent game against the Canterbury Bulldogs, Kotoni Staggs and Deine Mariner played through pain in a surprising win, showing the team’s resilience despite the challenges.
While the loss of Piakura is a major setback, there are some positive developments for the Broncos. Patrick Carrigan is set to return from suspension this week, offering a much-needed boost to the squad. Additionally, the club is hoping that Jesse Arthars and Reece Walsh will make a return from their respective injuries, further strengthening their lineup.
However, the team still faces several challenges. Preston Riki will miss a game due to suspension, creating a difficult situation for coach Michael Maguire as he looks to fill the second-row spot. With both Piakura and Riki out, the Broncos are in need of a reliable replacement for the position. Jordan Riki will take one side of the park, but who joins him remains uncertain. Potential options include Jack Gosiewski moving from prop to second-row, while Carrigan’s return could see Xavier Willison shift from lock to prop alongside Ben Talty.
The situation is compounded by the absence of Payne Haas and Corey Jensen, who are also sidelined. This means the Broncos will need to find another fresh face to add to their bench. Given the potential returns of Arthars and Walsh, it’s likely that Hayze Perham and either Josiah Karapani or Gehamat Shibasaki will be pushed out of the starting line-up. As a result, the team may have to rely on an outside back-heavy bench for the upcoming matches.
With so many challenges ahead, the Broncos will need to adapt quickly and make strategic decisions to navigate the rest of the season. The club’s management and coaching staff will be under pressure to ensure that the team remains competitive despite the ongoing injury crisis. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining how well the Broncos can recover and maintain their position in the league.
