Broncos stun Storm in GF rematch; Panthers decimate Roosters

Broncos Stage Stunning Comeback Against Storm in Melbourne

Brisbane have delivered a brutal second-half performance to snatch an 18-14 victory over Melbourne in a grand final rematch at AAMI Park, marking their first win of the NRL season. Much like their dramatic triumph in last year’s decider, the Broncos found themselves trailing significantly at halftime before unleashing a relentless attacking surge to overcome the Storm.

The first half saw the Storm dominate, taking a commanding 14-0 lead into the break. Brisbane struggled to find their rhythm, completing at a mere 55 per cent and looking set for a third consecutive loss to kick off their campaign. However, the second half witnessed a complete turnaround.

A Second-Half Transformation

The Broncos emerged from the sheds a different team. Second-rower Jordan Riki spearheaded the comeback, bagging two tries within a ten-minute period. This momentum was capitalised on by Kotoni Staggs, who crashed over in the 58th minute to give Brisbane their first lead of the match. Reece Walsh’s successful conversion extended their advantage to 18-14, a buffer they would defend resolutely.

This victory marked a significant milestone for Brisbane, their first win in Melbourne since 2016. Beyond the attacking prowess, the Broncos’ defence, which had been a concern in their opening two rounds conceding 66 points, showed remarkable steel. They managed to shut down the Storm’s desperate attempts to regain control of the contest in the dying stages.

Melbourne, despite creating multiple scoring opportunities, were unable to convert their chances into points, a stark contrast to their clinical first-half display. The Storm had completed at an impressive 88 per cent in the opening 40 minutes, continuing their strong start to the season where they had been previously unbeaten.

Storm’s First-Half Dominance

The Storm’s early dominance was highlighted by some impressive individual efforts. Sua Fa’alogo, fresh off a hat-trick in the previous round, was the first to cross the try line, running onto a well-timed pass from Joe Chan. Not to be outdone, second-rower Chan himself found the try line just before halftime, receiving an offload from Jahrome Hughes after he stood in a tackle.

Despite the jubilation of the comeback win, Brisbane did face a late concern when Reece Walsh was placed on report in the first half for an alleged high tackle on Storm playmaker Cameron Munster.

Bellamy Calls for Defensive Consistency

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy lamented his team’s defensive lapses in the second half. “Our defence was like two different teams, they just had the same jumper on,” Bellamy stated. “In the past, this team prides itself on its defence, and that’s one area that we need to improve this year.”

Panthers Crush Roosters in Dominant Display

In another significant NRL fixture, the Penrith Panthers have asserted their premiership credentials with a crushing 40-4 victory over the Sydney Roosters. The Panthers, widely considered the form team of the competition, showcased their formidable attacking power, with winger Tom Jenkins being the star of the show, scoring an incredible four tries.

The Roosters, coached by Trent Robinson, were unable to contain the relentless Panthers, who held a commanding 24-4 lead at halftime. This win marks Penrith’s third consecutive defeat of a premiership heavyweight to open the season, underscoring their dominance.

Jenkins Leads the Try-Scoring Charge

Tom Jenkins’ four-try haul propelled him to the top of the league’s try-scoring leaderboard with eight four-pointers for the season. He was ably supported by Dylan Edwards, who added a double, and Paul Alamoti, who consistently troubled the Roosters’ left edge defence throughout the match.

A particular highlight of the game was a spectacular individual try from Panthers winger Brian To’o. The Samoan international showcased exceptional skill, executing two brilliant kicks and regathers to score a memorable solo effort.

Unmatched Opening to the Season

Penrith’s opening three rounds have been nothing short of spectacular. Their three wins have come with a combined scoreline of 92-10, representing their most dominant start to a season by points differential since Ivan Cleary returned as coach in 2019.

“They’ve definitely been the form team to start the season,” acknowledged Roosters coach Robinson, acknowledging the Panthers’ superiority.

Despite the emphatic victory, the Panthers still show signs of areas for improvement. They missed 47 tackles compared to the Roosters’ 40 and conceded twice as many ‘six-agains’. However, their dominant performances suggest they are well on their way to recapturing the form that has seen them win four premierships, following a challenging 2025 season.
