Campers Lost in Northern New Zealand Landslide

Landslide Hits Popular Campsite in Northern New Zealand

Rescue operations are underway in northern New Zealand as emergency services search for survivors following a devastating landslide that struck a campsite. The incident occurred at the Beachside Holiday Park in Mount Maunganui, a well-known tourist destination on the northern coast of the country.

The landslide hit at 9:30 a.m. local time on Thursday (2030 GMT/UTC Wednesday), sending rubble crashing into the area. According to reports, hundreds of people were present at the campsite, as the region is still in the midst of summer school holidays.

New Zealand’s Fire and Emergency commander, William Pike, mentioned that there were initial signs of life at the site, but these have not been confirmed recently. Local news outlet Stuff reported that fire crews and members of the public had heard voices beneath the debris. However, due to the unstable ground, rescue workers had to temporarily withdraw, and no one has been rescued so far.

Sniffer dogs are currently at the scene, helping to locate any potential survivors. Their presence highlights the urgency of the situation and the efforts being made by authorities.

Children Among Those Missing

Local police have stated that the number of missing individuals is in the single digits, with children reportedly among them. This adds to the growing concern over the safety of those affected by the disaster.

One witness, Nix Jaques, shared her experience with Radio NZ. She described hearing an extremely loud noise as she was about to walk up a mountain. She then witnessed land sliding onto cars and toilet blocks. “I believe there were some people in the showers, and it shifted a campervan,” she said. She also mentioned a family with a campervan that was affected by the landslide.

Additional Disasters in the Region

In addition to the landslide at the campsite, two other people are still missing due to a separate landslide that struck a house in neighboring Papamoa. One individual was seriously injured in that incident.

Separately, another person went missing after being swept away in their vehicle north of Auckland, the main city on New Zealand’s North Island. These additional incidents highlight the widespread impact of the recent weather events.

Impact of Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rainfall along the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island over the past day has caused significant damage and left thousands without power. Fire and Emergency NZ reported that its crews have responded to 236 weather-related calls since early Thursday. Authorities have issued warnings to the public, urging them not to drive through floodwaters.

The ongoing efforts by rescue teams and emergency services reflect the challenges faced in the aftermath of the disasters. As more information becomes available, updates will continue to be provided to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.
