Voss Pleased as Blues Navigate Stormy Week with Hard-Fought Victory
Carlton coach Michael Voss expressed a sense of satisfaction rather than sheer relief after his team secured a narrow four-point win on Thursday night, capping a tumultuous week for the club. The Blues’ Opening Round performance against Sydney had drawn significant criticism, particularly after a dramatic collapse in the third quarter saw a substantial lead evaporate.
The scrutiny intensified following remarks attributed to former club captain Sam Docherty, which reportedly cast the club in an unflattering light and amplified the pressure cooker environment surrounding the team.
“Who would be a coach, hey? Who wants to do this? Seriously, you’ve gotta be a madman,” Voss commented in the immediate aftermath of the hard-fought win. He elaborated on the external pressures his team had faced.
“Tonight was a little bit about our club. We’ve been targeted the whole week, both inside and out, and we get away for a win, and I’m just pleased our supporters can walk away and have a smile on their face and wear their jumper with pride and wear their scarf around their neck. I feel like this one was for our club, I really do. It was hard fought, it wasn’t exactly the way we wanted it. There was no bow on it. We had to work for it, and we got it. I’m just really pleased for my club that we were able to do it.”
Voss emphasised the internal focus and resilience shown by the playing group. “I can’t stress enough that we spent a lot of time within our group ensuring we value what is happening on the inside. We see what’s happening on the inside, and we’ve seen the shift in that energy. This meant a lot for our players tonight, to get the job done. But we’re not looking at it through rose-coloured glasses, either. There’s some realness in where we are, we accept that we’re not the finished product. We have work to do. But what we won’t do, is not celebrate when we need to.”
The echoes of history were palpable, recalling a similar match in 2025 where the opposition staged a remarkable comeback from 41 points down to snatch victory. The Blues’ defensive vulnerabilities in the second half, a recurring issue over the past twelve months, threatened to resurface. Furthermore, their attacking unit appeared to struggle, managing only one major score in the final two quarters.
“We couldn’t keep the ball in our front half,” Voss observed. “They were able to live in their front half. You get criticised for last week and not being able to put together a third quarter. You go away and reflect on that and it’s clearly something we’ve got to get better at.”
He highlighted the team’s fighting spirit when under duress. “But what I did ask our boys to do was fight. When teams surge, our ability to be able to hold went longer than I would like, so there’s some reinforcement there. It just meant we had our backs to the wall. All we could do was fight out of it. You’ve got to begin somewhere, don’t you? So that’s where we begin.”
Voss reiterated the nature of the victory. “It’s hard-fought. It wasn’t exactly the way we wanted it, there was no bow on it. We had to work for it and we got it. I’m just really pleased for our club that we were able to do that.”
Looking Ahead: A Much-Needed Break and Key Fixtures
Following their hard-earned win, Carlton will now enjoy a three-day break before entering a Round 2 bye. This period of rest comes at a crucial time, allowing the team to regroup and reflect as they head into the break with a 1-1 record.
Their return to action will see them face Melbourne on Sunday, March 29th. This will be followed by an intriguing clash against North Melbourne on Good Friday, April 4th, a fixture that is sure to capture the attention of fans and pundits alike. The upcoming schedule presents further opportunities for the Blues to build momentum and address the areas for improvement identified during their recent matches. The team’s ability to maintain focus and execute their game plan against strong opposition will be key to their success in the coming weeks.
