Carrick Backs England Trio’s Recall After United Form Surge

Carrick Backs United Trio for England Recall Amidst Form Surge

Michael Carrick, the interim manager at Manchester United, has thrown his support behind a trio of English talent within the squad – Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, and Luke Shaw – urging for their inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s upcoming England squad. This potential recall comes as Tuchel prepares to announce his final selection for the World Cup, with the next squad announcement on Friday serving as a crucial precursor.

Maguire and Mainoo last donned the Three Lions jersey in September 2024, under the guidance of caretaker manager Lee Carsley, during a Nations League fixture against Ireland. Shaw’s most recent international outing was the Euro 2024 final against Spain. All three have yet to feature under the permanent stewardship of Thomas Tuchel, who has previously alluded to their potential inclusion, dismissing any notion of a bias against Manchester United players. “Every decision is an individual decision,” the England boss stated in August, emphatically adding, “There is for sure no decision against Man United.”

Carrick is hopeful that the recent upturn in Manchester United’s performances, spearheaded by his interim management, has been sufficient to catch Tuchel’s eye. The upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan present an ideal opportunity for these players to re-establish themselves in the national team setup.

When questioned about any direct communication with Tuchel regarding his players’ prospects, Carrick revealed, “No, I haven’t been in touch. For the boys, I’d love to see them picked for this one and obviously picked for the summer.” He acknowledged his lack of influence on the final decision-making process but expressed confidence in the players’ current form. “I don’t have any influence on that but certainly the boys, the way they’re playing, I think they’ve put themselves right in the conversation and right in the picture and given themselves a chance. So we’ll see. I literally don’t know any more than you on that one.”

Carrick reiterated his belief in the players’ merit, stating, “But the boys are definitely playing well enough to warrant a place for sure. It’s just not my decision so we’ll have to wait and see.”

Injury Update: Mixed News for Manchester United

Ahead of Manchester United’s journey to the South Coast for their Friday fixture against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, Carrick provided a comprehensive update on the team’s injury concerns.

Matthijs de Ligt remains a significant absentee, with no immediate prospect of his return from a persistent back injury that has kept him sidelined for four months. “It’s frustrating for him,” Carrick commented. “I think he’s obviously trying to work towards getting back but just the back issue really, that’s proving difficult. So we’ll keep working as hard as we can with everyone to get him back as quick as we can.”

In more positive news, Lisandro Martínez is making significant strides in his recovery from a calf injury. While the upcoming clash with Bournemouth might arrive too soon for his full return, Carrick anticipates his involvement soon after. “He’s closer, a lot closer,” Carrick confirmed. “He’s getting there, so after this one I think he’ll be alright. Patrick (Dorgu) is further down the line.”

Noussair Mazraoui was absent from Wednesday’s training session at Carrington. Carrick explained that the player “just wasn’t feeling too good today,” indicating a minor, short-term issue.

Meanwhile, Mason Mount is expected to feature on the substitutes’ bench for the second consecutive game. His return from his latest injury layoff is being carefully managed, with Carrick suggesting that a starting role would be premature at this juncture. “Starting would be too much I think at this point, just for the training time and the exposure that he’s had really,” he explained. However, the manager expressed his delight at Mount’s return, highlighting his importance to the squad. “But it’s brilliant to have him back. He’s a fantastic player, Mason, and great to have around the group again.”

Carrick added, “So we’re delighted to have him back and obviously the break coming up now gives him a chance to get even more up to speed. So in some ways that’s coming at a good time for him.”
