New Updates to the 2026 MG4 Urban in China

MG has recently updated the new MG4 Urban in China just a month after its launch in the Australian market. This updated model, known as the MG4 in China, introduces a notable enhancement: a new 53.9kWh semi-solid-state battery. This addition complements the existing 42.8kWh and 53.9kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options. It marks the first time that MG has incorporated this type of battery into a production vehicle available for purchase.

The introduction of the semi-solid-state battery is significant as it promises improved safety and faster charging rates compared to traditional LFP batteries. However, despite these advancements, the 53.9kWh semi-solid-state battery variant of the MG4 Urban offers the same 30 to 80 per cent DC fast-charge time of 21 minutes as the 53.9kWh LFP unit. Additionally, the claimed range remains identical at 530km under lenient CLTC testing conditions.

It is currently unclear whether MG intends to enhance the charging and range capabilities of the semi-solid-state battery in the future or if the specifications provided are an oversight.

Technical Enhancements and Design Changes

All variants of the MG4 Urban are powered by a single front-mounted electric motor that delivers 120kW and 250Nm. The current model is available with either 110kW/250Nm or 118kW/250Nm, depending on the battery pack size.

In addition to the battery upgrade, the updated MG4 Urban features several stylistic and technological changes. Externally, there are new alloy wheel options, an illuminated MG front badge, and the availability of a black two-tone roof.

Interior Upgrades and Technological Improvements

Inside the updated MG4 Urban, the steering wheel has been redesigned from a three-spoke to a two-spoke configuration. A larger 15.6-inch touchscreen multimedia system is available on certain trims, along with a more powerful 50W wireless charger and fewer buttons on the central stack.

The current Australian-specification MG4 Urban still includes physical buttons and knobs for climate control and media volume adjustments. However, in the updated Chinese-specification version, these functions are now exclusively controlled through the touchscreen. At this point, it remains uncertain whether MG will eventually introduce this updated version to the Australian market, especially considering that the previous model was only recently launched.

Expansion of the MG4 Range

This front-wheel-drive version of the MG4 is being sold alongside the previous rear-wheel-drive model, which recently underwent a major update. Beyond this, the Chinese automaker also used this year’s Beijing Motor Show to tease an SUV version of the MG4 Urban, named the MG4X. MG claims that the MG4X will be officially revealed in May.
