Citizen’s arrest stops tiny home thief on Sunshine Coast

A Citizen’s Arrest in Queensland

A jujitsu black belt holder has made headlines after pulling off a dramatic citizen’s arrest of a man accused of stealing a tiny home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The incident unfolded following the disappearance of two tiny homes from a rural property in Cooran on Sunday morning.

Later that day, about 50 kilometres south in Bli Bli, Eduardo Giraldes was riding his electric skateboard when he noticed a tiny home on a trailer parked on a nearby street. Upon returning home, he came across a social media post appealing for help to find the allegedly stolen tiny homes, which closely resembled the one he had seen on the street.

Mr. Giraldes and his friend Diego Sanches Nogueira decided to investigate further. When they confronted the driver, Mr. Giraldes said the man attempted to start the car and drive away, prompting them to use their own vehicle to block him from leaving.

Mr. Giraldes was not convinced by the man’s claims that he had purchased the tiny home, so he called the police. “We’re just holding the guy saying, ‘Man, you’re not going to move’,” he said. “We are more than 100 kilograms, both of us. I trained in jujitsu for over 13 years already. I knew if something happened, I knew how to hold him. I think he knew that he didn’t have any chance and he didn’t try.”

When officers arrived, they questioned the man before arresting him. Subsequent investigations led police to find the second missing tiny home at an address in Tewantin. The man has been charged with one count of stealing the tiny home and one count of stealing the trailer. He will appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court in May.

Investigations are continuing into the alleged theft of the second tiny home. Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

The Role of Community Vigilance

Mr. Giraldes said it felt satisfying to help out. “My girlfriend is always making fun of me, that I always stop to help people, like change tyres and those kind of things,” he said. “But this was another level for sure, and it feels pretty good.”

This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and the role that individuals can play in ensuring justice. Mr. Giraldes’ actions demonstrate not only his commitment to helping others but also his ability to act decisively in a challenging situation.
