Cole’s Italian Sojourn Begins with a Stumble
Ashley Cole’s highly anticipated foray into management has hit an immediate snag, with his new club, Italian Serie B side Cesena FC, suffering a comprehensive 3-0 away defeat in his very first match at the helm. The former England and Chelsea star was appointed head coach on Sunday, tasked with guiding the team until the end of the season, with the potential for an extended tenure dependent on achieving certain undisclosed objectives.
However, any optimism surrounding a potential “new manager bounce” was quickly dispelled on Tuesday night. Despite facing a Mantova side that sat seven places below them in the league standings, Cesena was unable to find the back of the net and instead conceded three goals, leaving Cole with a significant challenge to overcome.
A Difficult Debut Match
The fixture, held at the Stadio Danilo Martelli, began on a sour note for Cesena. In a cruel twist of fate, defender Giovanni Zaro inadvertently put the home side ahead in just the sixth minute with an own goal.

While Cesena managed to hold Mantova at bay for the remainder of the first half, the deficit was doubled just 12 minutes after the restart. Andrea Meroni found the net for Mantova, further dampening Cesena’s hopes. The final blow came in the dying moments of the match, with Leonardo Mancuso striking in the third minute of stoppage time to seal a comfortable 3-0 victory for the hosts. This result leaves Cesena facing a considerable 122-mile journey home, with their aspirations of securing a play-off spot now under threat.

The Current League Landscape
Cesena currently finds itself in eighth position in Italy’s second tier. This precarious spot is the final play-off berth, with the team holding a slender one-point advantage over ninth-placed Avellino. The pressure is undoubtedly on Cole to turn results around quickly.
Before the match, Cole appeared in good spirits, smiling and acknowledging the travelling Cesena supporters with a thumbs-up. However, by the final whistle, his demeanour had shifted to one of visible frustration, a stark reflection of the disappointing performance on the pitch.
What Lies Ahead for Cole and Cesena
Cole will have little time to reflect on this opening-day setback. Cesena is scheduled to host US Catanzaro on Saturday, a team currently sitting three places above them in Serie B. This upcoming fixture at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi will mark Cole’s first home game in charge and presents an immediate opportunity to try and secure his first win as a manager.
Cole’s Extensive Coaching Background
The move to Italy represents Cole’s first senior management role. Prior to this appointment, the 45-year-old had accumulated a wealth of coaching experience since hanging up his boots in 2019. He most recently served as a full-time national coach with the Football Association in England.
His coaching journey also includes significant spells as an assistant manager. He worked under Frank Lampard in various capacities at both Everton and Chelsea, and later held the same role at Birmingham City during Wayne Rooney’s tenure. Furthermore, Cole gained international experience, working with the England Under-21 side and assisting Lee Carsley with the senior national squad.

Cole has been joined in Italy by Chelsea academy coach Jack Mesure. Their initial contracts run until June 30th, with an option for extension contingent upon the club meeting specific performance targets.
