The Washington Commanders are in the final stages of their preparation for the 2026 NFL Draft. This will be a crucial period for the franchise as they look to add talent and bounce back from a season that didn’t go as planned. The team is under pressure to make strategic decisions that could shape their future for years to come.
There are multiple needs that the Commanders could address, but the path forward isn’t clear-cut. General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn can’t afford to make any missteps. With an offseason filled with changes and new additions, there’s speculation that the team might focus on the defensive side of the ball with their top-10 pick.
According to NFL Insider, it’s not surprising if the Commanders lean heavily into defense during the draft. The franchise needs a budding star who can make an immediate impact as a rookie.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is expecting the Commanders to look for someone to build around on defense. He believes the team will prioritize finding a player who can become a key piece of their defense moving forward.
“Last year’s Commanders’ defense was not what you were looking for. They ended up making a ton of staff changes,” Rapoport said. “Now, for Dan Quinn and his unit on defense, this becomes an unbelievably important situation. I would not be surprised if the Commanders say, ‘Who is the best defensive player on our board, we will just take him.'”
Rapoport highlighted a few names that could be in contention for the Commanders’ No. 7 pick. These include the Ohio State duo of safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Sonny Styles, along with Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr.
“Caleb Downs, a really good safety from Ohio State, has been talked about a lot. People talk about his makeup like it’s just crazy,” Rapoport said. “Sonny Styles, an off-ball linebacker, is also from Ohio State. He’s a big, rangy guy, and people love his makeup and how he’s wired. As they’re looking for a new lynchpin on the defense, both these guys would potentially be in the conversation.”
“Then there’s Rueben Bain, a defensive end from Miami. He’s likely to be on the board at this time. His short arms have gotten a lot of attention, but he’s a big, tough, burly, physical football player,” Rapoport added. “Do the Commanders go here after adding so much at the EDGE in free agency? They’re going to have a lot of options in a really, really good draft class.”
The 2026 NFL Draft will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, starting on Thursday, April 23. Here are the Commanders’ projected picks:
- Round 1 (Pick 7)
- Round 3 (Pick 71)
- Round 5 (Pick 147)
- Round 6 (Pick 187)
- Round 6 (Pick 209)
- Round 7 (Pick 223)
As the draft approaches, fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see which direction the Commanders will take. With so many possibilities, the team must carefully evaluate their needs and the available talent to make the best choices for their future.
