A Scots Model Speaks Out Against Racist Abuse
A Scottish model has spoken out against a wave of racist abuse he received after revealing the outfits that will be worn by the country’s athletes at the Commonwealth Games. Adam Belarbi, along with fellow model Victoria Epia, faced a torrent of offensive comments from anonymous users on social media. These comments accused them of not being Scottish, despite their clear connection to the country.
The controversial posts were widely criticized by various parties, including Commonwealth Games Scotland, the designer of the outfits, and Mr. Belarbi himself. He expressed his disappointment, stating: “I did not expect this amount of blatant hate and racism.”

Belarbi continued: “I’m truly disappointed by the comments under this post. I was honoured to have landed the job as the model for the launch of the ceremonial Commonwealth Games outfit of my home country and host nation.”
He added: “From my experience growing up, going to school, living, working and studying in Scotland, I am saddened by these comments and believe they are not representative of our society. I take pride in being from Scotland and take pride in the kind, warm and open-minded nature of the people. However, it’s clear we still have a long way to go.”
Designer Condemns the Comments
Siobhan Mackenzie, the designer of the outfits, also voiced her concern about the racist comments that circulated online. She said: “It has been incredibly disheartening to witness the volume of racist comments circulating across multiple platforms.”
Her reaction highlights the broader issue of discrimination that continues to affect public figures, even in the context of national events like the Commonwealth Games.
Team Scotland Issues Statement
A spokesperson for Team Scotland condemned the abuse directed at the models. They stated: “Commonwealth Games Scotland condemns in the strongest possible terms the abhorrent online abuse aimed at the models who featured in our ceremonies outfit reveal this week. Discrimination has no place in sport or society. Adam and Victoria have our full and ongoing support.”
This statement underscores the commitment of the organization to promoting inclusivity and respect within the sporting community.
The Impact of Social Media
The incident raises important questions about the role of social media in spreading hate and misinformation. While platforms provide a space for public discourse, they can also become breeding grounds for racism and prejudice. The backlash faced by Belarbi and Epia is a stark reminder of the challenges that individuals may encounter when representing their country.
Moving Forward
Despite the negative experiences, Belarbi remains hopeful about the future. He emphasized the positive aspects of Scottish society, highlighting the kindness and openness of its people. His message serves as a call to action for individuals to stand against discrimination and promote unity.
In conclusion, the incident involving Adam Belarbi and Victoria Epia highlights the ongoing need for awareness and education around issues of race and inclusion. It is essential for communities to come together and address such challenges, ensuring that everyone feels respected and valued.
