Coral Adventurer Stranded, Detained Off PNG Coast

Luxury Cruise Ship Detained After Running Aground Off Papua New Guinea

A luxury cruise ship, the Coral Adventurer, has been detained by maritime authorities following an incident where it ran aground on a coral reef approximately 30 kilometres off the coast of Lae, Papua New Guinea. The vessel, which departed from Cairns, Australia, on December 18th, was carrying 80 passengers and 43 crew members on a 12-night Christmas voyage.

This latest incident occurs just two months after a tragic event in October, where an 80-year-old Australian grandmother was left behind on a remote island during a stopover on a different, high-end cruise.

The Coral Adventurer struck the reef in the early hours of Saturday morning. After being stranded for three and a half days, the ship was successfully refloated and is currently at anchor. Initial inspections by certified divers have indicated no significant damage to the vessel’s hull. However, divers are continuing their comprehensive assessments of both the ship and the surrounding marine environment.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has detained the vessel based on a “reasonable suspicion that it is not seaworthy due to potential damage sustained during the grounding.” This detention signifies a serious concern regarding the ship’s operational safety.

A Shadow of Past Tragedy

The grounding of the Coral Adventurer casts a long shadow, particularly given its recent history. The vessel was undertaking its first voyage since the unfortunate death of Suzanne Rees, an 80-year-old grandmother from New South Wales. Ms. Rees was left behind on Lizard Island, a Great Barrier Reef island, during a stopover on an exclusive circumnavigation of Australia cruise in October.

Ms. Rees had embarked on a hike to the island’s highest peak but turned back due to fatigue. Tragically, she failed to reboard the ship. This incident raised significant questions about the considerable five-hour delay in initiating a search for the missing passenger. Multiple investigations by various authorities into this tragedy are ongoing.

Investigation Underway

In response to the grounding incident, officials from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) travelled to Papua New Guinea on Wednesday to interview the captain and crew of the stranded Coral Adventurer.

“There are a number of different agencies who will be looking into this,” stated ATSB Commissioner Angus Mitchell in a television interview. “But we’re focused on working out exactly what happened and what lessons can be learned. Obviously, with 80 people in the middle of a cruise, it wasn’t an ideal way to finish a Christmas cruise.”

Mr. Mitchell highlighted that the Coral Adventurer was navigating these particular confined waters for the first time when the grounding occurred. While other vessels operated by Coral Expeditions have navigated these waters previously, this specific voyage presented a new challenge.

The ATSB’s investigation will meticulously examine several key aspects:

  • Passage Planning: Understanding the detailed plans and preparations made for navigating the route.
  • Provisions: Assessing the measures taken for operating in confined and shallower waters.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Identifying precisely what went wrong leading to the grounding.

Investigators have secured data from the ship’s voyage recorder and are actively gathering supplementary information, including tracking data, meteorological reports, and relevant crew, operator, and maintenance records.

Company Response and Passenger Reassurance

A spokesperson for the cruise company acknowledged the incident, stating, “Pending the outcome of local investigations, the vessel will then travel to Cairns and Coral Expeditions crew and staff will assist local authorities in further investigations.”

The company expressed sincere regret for the grounding and extended apologies to the passengers for the disruption they experienced.

Key actions taken by Coral Expeditions include:

  • Passenger Repatriation: All passengers and non-essential crew have been successfully transported back to their homes or onward travel arrangements.
  • Compensation: Passengers have been offered full refunds for the affected portion of their journey or credit towards future travel.

The company faces significant scrutiny, with questions arising about its ability to recover from these successive safety concerns, including the recent passenger fatality and the current grounding. The incidents have led to broader discussions about safety protocols and operational management within the luxury cruise sector.
