Coronation Street Fans Left Disappointed by Off-Screen Character’s Return
Fans of the long-running British soap opera, Coronation Street, experienced a mix of emotions this week as a familiar face from the past was mentioned in connection with the funeral of Jim McDonald. While the return of a former character was a cause for excitement for many, the frustrating twist was that the character, Samantha Failsworth, only appeared in name and not on screen, leaving viewers yearning for a physical comeback.
Jim McDonald, a beloved but often controversial figure in Weatherfield, died off-screen. His son, Steve McDonald (played by Simon Gregson), was seen paying his final respects this week. He was joined by his daughter Amy (Elle Mulvaney) and other familiar faces such as Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) and Ben Driscoll (Aaron McCusker), who were present to offer support.
During a poignant moment of remembrance at the Rovers Return pub, where patrons were toasting Jim’s memory, a question from Amy to her father revealed the presence of a past Weatherfield regular. “Who was the one in the ridiculous coat?” she inquired. Steve’s reply, “Oh, Samantha Failsworth. She was younger than me,” confirmed the character’s attendance. He further elaborated, stating, “They were just friends but if he had his way they’d have been more.”

This mention immediately sparked recognition among long-time viewers, who will recall Samantha Failsworth as a memorable barmaid at the Rovers Return during the 1990s. The role was brought to life by actress Tina Hobley, who portrayed Samantha for over 200 episodes between 1996 and her departure in 1998.
The revelation that Samantha was present at Jim’s funeral, even if only through dialogue, ignited hopes for a full on-screen return for the character. However, the disappointment was palpable when it became clear she would not be seen. Social media platforms were quickly abuzz with fans expressing their feelings.
One viewer tweeted, “Got excited at the mention of my first #Corrie crush in today’s episode. Oh Sam!” Another lamented, “Samantha Failsworth coming back to Weatherfield for Jim’s funeral and i didn’t get to see it… i could cry. ‘Tina Hobley let’s take a break from radio for just one day and get back on those cobbles pls x.'”
Samantha’s tenure on the cobbles was marked by a series of dramatic storylines. Notably, she was involved in a romance with Des Barnes (Philip Middlemiss). Following their split, Samantha’s jealousy over Des’s new relationship with Natalie Horrocks (Denise Welch) led her to fabricate a pregnancy, falsely claiming to be carrying Des’s child. Her deceit was eventually uncovered, leading to her permanent departure from Weatherfield.

What Happened to Samantha Failsworth?
Samantha Failsworth’s character arc on Coronation Street concluded with her lies being exposed, prompting her to leave the fictional town for good. Her storyline provided several memorable moments for viewers during the late 90s.
Tina Hobley’s Post-Coronation Street Career
Since her time on the iconic ITV soap, actress Tina Hobley has enjoyed a diverse and successful career. Following her departure from Coronation Street, she took on the role of Chrissie Williams in the BBC medical drama Holby City. She played this part consistently from 2001 until 2013, becoming another well-recognised face in British television drama.
Beyond her acting roles, Tina Hobley has also established a prominent presence in radio broadcasting. She has become a familiar voice as a presenter with Smooth Radio, a popular commercial music station.

The Possibility of a Return
In 2020, Tina Hobley addressed the persistent question of whether a return to Coronation Street was on the cards. Speaking to The Express, she expressed an openness to reprising her role, acknowledging the significance of such iconic productions. “I think with those iconic shows you must always consider, it’s such a privilege to be part of those big ongoing companies so I would always consider it,” she stated. “It was such an honour to be part of it, so of course, if ever the character came back.”
When questioned further about her character’s fate, Hobley admitted a degree of forgetfulness, a common sentiment for actors who have played many roles over the years. “I don’t know what happened to her, I can’t actually remember what happened to her and I haven’t really watched it over the last two years so I have no idea what’s going on but, yes, as an actor you always have to say yes,” she explained. Her philosophy on career opportunities is one of embracing possibilities. “My thing is say yes to everything, I think life is so short to put barriers up and say no – I won’t do that. My answer would always be, ‘Yes of course, why not?'”
While Samantha Failsworth’s return was not a physical one this time, the continued discussion and fan desire for her reappearance highlight the lasting impact of her character on Coronation Street‘s history. The show continues to air on ITV1 and is available for streaming on ITVX.
