Coupang Announces Compensation Plan Following Major Data Leak
Coupang, one of South Korea’s leading e-commerce platforms, has unveiled a comprehensive compensation plan worth 1.685 trillion won following a significant data breach that affected 33.7 million users. The announcement came 30 days after the incident, which sparked widespread public concern and criticism.
The core of the compensation plan involves providing each affected customer with points valued at 50,000 Korean won. This initiative is seen as an effort to mitigate negative public sentiment and restore trust in the company. The move follows an apology from Coupang Inc.’s Board Chairman, Kim Bom-suk, who presented the plan amid increasing political pressure ahead of a parliamentary hearing scheduled for the 30th.
In a statement released on the same day, Coupang expressed deep regret over the incident, stating, “We deeply regret the recent personal information leak and plan to implement a customer compensation plan worth 1.685 trillion won to restore customer trust.” According to the company’s plan, the compensation will be distributed in the form of purchase vouchers starting from January 15 of next year.
All affected members, regardless of their membership status—whether they are Wow members, regular members, or former members who have withdrawn—will receive the same amount. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that no user is left without compensation due to their account status.
However, the 50,000 Korean won purchase voucher cannot be used all at once for purchases on Coupang. Instead, the company has decided to split the voucher into four distinct categories:
- Rocket Delivery: 5,000 won
- Rocket Direct Purchase: 5,000 won
- Seller Rocket: 5,000 won
- Marketplace Coupang products: 5,000 won
- Coupang Eats: 5,000 won
- Coupang Travel products: 20,000 won
- R.LUX products: 20,000 won
This distribution method ensures that customers can use the vouchers across different services offered by Coupang. However, users who do not utilize Coupang Eats will need to sign up for the service to fully benefit from the voucher. This requirement may pose some challenges for those who are not familiar with or interested in the food delivery platform.
The compensation plan is a significant step towards addressing the concerns raised by customers and the broader public. It also reflects the growing importance of data security in the digital age, where companies must take proactive measures to protect user information and maintain consumer confidence.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how effective this compensation plan will be in restoring trust in Coupang. The company’s response to the data breach and its subsequent actions will likely serve as a benchmark for other businesses facing similar challenges.
