Cowboys Hooking for First Win: Mahoney’s “Mongrel” Meets Need for Smarts
North Queensland’s new recruit, Reed Mahoney, is already earning plaudits for the tenacity and “mongrel” he’s injected into the Cowboys’ forward pack. However, the feisty hooker is far more focused on securing the club’s maiden victory of the season than basking in personal praise, especially after a winless opening to their campaign.
The Cowboys’ season kicked off with a disappointing 28-18 loss to the Newcastle Knights in Las Vegas. This was followed by a dismal performance last week, culminating in a heavy 44-16 defeat at the hands of the Wests Tigers. This Sunday, their first home game of the season against the Gold Coast Titans presents an opportunity to face another team that finished in the bottom five last year. A win is no longer just desirable; it’s a necessity to inject momentum into their season.
Co-captain Tom Dearden highlighted the importance of rectifying errors and improving discipline ahead of the clash with the Titans. He also expressed his confidence in Mahoney, a former Parramatta and Canterbury rake, to lift his game and inspire the team.
“Reed has been fantastic. His competitive spirit and sheer drive have really rubbed off on the entire group,” Dearden stated. “He’s been a massive help during our huddles and brings that essential bit of mongrel that genuinely inspires the players.
“Hopefully, we can demonstrate better discipline, build more sustained pressure, and then we’ll truly get to see the full extent of what he’s capable of.”

Last week’s statistics paint a stark picture of the Cowboys’ struggles. The team committed a staggering 13 errors and missed a concerning 46 tackles. While Mahoney himself put in a considerable effort with 40 tackles, he did miss six, an area he’ll be looking to tighten up.
“Last week, we collectively missed the mark as a team. We’ve had honest conversations, looked each other in the eye, and we are absolutely determined to grind out a win,” Mahoney commented, reflecting on the team’s resolve.
When informed of Dearden’s complimentary remarks about his “mongrel” approach, Mahoney was quick to point out that sheer desire alone isn’t enough. He believes that adding greater detail and strategic smarts to the Cowboys’ play will be crucial to complement the acknowledged tenacity.
“That’s just who I am, really. I’m inherently competitive, and there are several blokes in this team who share that same drive,” Mahoney explained. “I believe we’ve shown a lot of bravery over the past couple of weeks, but sometimes that courage doesn’t propel you as far as you’d ideally like. We need to be much more precise in specific areas of our game. I’m confident that if we continue to play with bravery while also nailing the finer details, we’ll start achieving the results we’re aiming for.
“Now, we have a fantastic opportunity to play in front of our passionate home crowd, and our primary hope is to kickstart our season with a much-needed victory.”
The Cowboys found themselves in a deep hole last week, trailing 28-2 at halftime. Dearden emphasised that a more physical approach and a drastic improvement in discipline are paramount if they are to turn their season around.
“What I find most exciting about our current group is the immense competitiveness and the genuine desire from everyone to improve,” Dearden added. “You can feel that palpable energy at training sessions. There are so many individuals who deeply care about this club and possess a burning passion to see us turn our fortunes around.”
