Simon Cowell’s Latest Boyband Endeavour Hits Rough Patches Amidst Industry Doubts
Renowned music mogul Simon Cowell has once again thrown his hat into the ring to cultivate the UK’s next global boyband, but early industry reactions to their latest single are far from favourable, with some insiders labelling the project a “catastrophe.” Cowell, 66, assembled the seven-member group, named December 10, through his Netflix series The Next Act, a show that faced significant criticism upon its premiere last month.
The band comprises Cruz Lee-Ojo (19), Danny Bretherton (17), Hendrick Christoffersen (19), John Fadare (17), Josh Olliver (17), Nicolas Alves (16), and Sean Hayden (19). Following their debut release “Run My Way,” Cowell recently took to his Instagram Stories to promote December 10’s second single by sharing a screenshot of its lyrics.
Despite assembling a formidable team, reportedly including a publicist with connections to global superstar Taylor Swift, the band has so far struggled to gain significant traction in the music scene. Their initial single, “Run My Way,” debuted on the charts at a modest number 72, managing to sell only 6,300 combined units during its first week of release.

This lukewarm reception has led industry insiders to express serious concerns, with descriptions of the project ranging from a “disaster” to a “catastrophe.” These sentiments are casting a shadow of doubt over the potential for a second season of The Next Act. While Cowell remains determined to replicate the phenomenal success he achieved with One Direction, the immediate future of December 10 appears uncertain.
Recently, the band took to the stage in Glasgow, Scotland, as part of their “Introducing! Tour.” Performing at Oran Mor, the members of December 10 cut a stylish figure, sporting oversized T-shirts and jeans as they entertained their burgeoning fanbase.
Cowell’s Self-Deprecating Confession
Interestingly, this period of uncertainty for his new band comes shortly after Simon Cowell made a candid and somewhat startling confession about his own perceived lack of talent. During a Q&A session held at London’s Ham Yard Hotel, following a special screening for the new series of Britain’s Got Talent, Cowell was asked what his own talent would be if he were to audition for the show.
He responded with remarkable candour, stating, “I was lucky actually, very early on, I realised honestly I have no talent whatsoever. You know when I see this stuff it’s like I couldn’t do that. Actually being the most talentless person in the world.”
The Next Act and the Shadow of One Direction
Cowell’s self-deprecating remarks follow revelations from figures within the music industry regarding the performance of his ambitious Netflix project, The Next Act. The show documented Cowell’s mission to assemble a new boyband, five years after the closure of his Syco label. The series aimed to discover the next major pop phenomenon, with auditions held across the UK and Ireland. Ultimately, seven singers were selected to form the group.

A source close to the project revealed to the Daily Mail that Cowell harboured significant hopes of recreating the One Direction magic. “Simon was so hopeful that he could replicate One Direction. That was the premise upon which the Netflix show was built,” the source stated. “There were many 1D comparisons used for publicity around the show and the band, but the reality is that his new band are just not there yet – and may never be.”
This setback represents a rare stumble for Cowell, a man who, in his prime, was instrumental in launching the careers of numerous chart-topping artists, including Westlife, Leona Lewis, Olly Murs, JLS, and Alexandra Burke.
Britain’s Got Talent Returns with a New Judge and Anniversary Plans
Meanwhile, Britain’s Got Talent is set to return to screens on Saturday, February 21. The judging panel for the upcoming series will feature Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden (54), Alesha Dixon (47), and newcomer KSI (32). KSI steps into a permanent role following the departure of Bruno Tonioli (70) last year.
Cowell also revealed that Stacey Solomon (36) will be making a guest appearance as a judge this series. This came about after Cowell himself was forced to withdraw from filming due to an accident. He explained, “I literally fell down the stairs, so I had a concussion, so I was advised, don’t do it. Obviously, I knew Stacey from X Factor…I wasn’t there, but apparently she did an amazing job.” When questioned about the possibility of Solomon becoming a permanent fixture on the panel, Cowell confirmed, “No, we’re not changing the panel.”
Looking ahead, Cowell confirmed that even grander plans are in motion, as the show is gearing up to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a special “all-stars champions” series next year. He expressed his enthusiasm for this upcoming event: “The same judges will be back. We are doing a champions show next year as well, the best of the best, which is brilliant. You get the best contestants from all over the world and you re-compete in a big competition, so, I like those kind of things.”
