Ricky Ponting’s Impact on Punjab Kings’ Success
Ricky Ponting’s influence at the unbeaten Punjab Kings is being celebrated by both his players and fans after a seven-wicket win against the Mumbai Indians secured the top spot on the IPL table. The victory not only showcased the team’s strength but also highlighted the role of their coach in shaping their success.
Arshdeep Singh played a pivotal role in Punjab’s latest triumph, and the paceman credited a pre-game chat with the Australian cricket legend for his impressive performance at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Arshdeep took 3-22 to help restrict the home side’s total to 195, despite a strong batting display from Quinton de Kock and Naman Dhir. However, the visitors chased down the target with 21 balls to spare thanks to match-winning performances from Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer.
Punjab’s fourth consecutive victory was largely driven by a stellar bowling performance from Arshdeep, who admitted he was struggling with confidence before the game. While he had been instrumental in India’s T20 World Cup victory earlier this year, he hadn’t managed to replicate that form in the IPL. However, a pre-game conversation with Ponting helped him regain his sharpness against Mumbai.
“It feels good, and it goes back to having a chat with Ricky,” Arshdeep said after the game. “I told him the ball didn’t feel right when it left the hand. The chat was nothing technical, but he told me I was expecting too much from myself, coming off a high of the World Cup win, and said you can’t maintain that all the time.”
Ponting’s advice had an immediate impact as Arshdeep removed key threats Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav with a powerful spell of swing bowling in his second over. He later dismissed Sherfane Rutherford with a brilliant yorker when the ball was reverse-swinging, completing his three-wicket haul.
While Australian quick Xavier Bartlett did not take a wicket, he contributed with two catches for Punjab. One of the catches came after a remarkable piece of fielding from Iyer, who made an outstanding mid-air catch before throwing the ball back in-field to Bartlett before he crossed the boundary rope.
Shreyas Iyer’s Form Under Ponting
Shreyas Iyer has been in excellent form under Ponting’s leadership, with his partnership with wicketkeeper-opener Prabhsimran Singh proving crucial in securing the victory. Both players hit half centuries to set up the win, which leaves Punjab at the top of the standings after four wins from five matches, with one match ending in a no result due to a wash-out.
Kings fans are praising the leadership of Ponting and Iyer, with the latter being brought to Punjab last year before being appointed captain this season. This move has proven to be inspired, as Iyer has elevated his game under the added responsibility.
Iyer has scored three half centuries and accumulated 203 runs in his four innings for the Kings this season, averaging 67.66 with a strike rate of 187.96. His exceptional form has helped the undefeated Kings establish themselves as the team to beat in 2026, following their runner-up finish in last year’s IPL final.
