Daniel Radcliffe’s Top and Bottom “Harry Potter” Films

Daniel Radcliffe Shares His Favorite and Least Favorite Harry Potter Films

Daniel Radcliffe, the iconic actor who portrayed Harry Potter on the big screen, has recently opened up about his personal preferences when it comes to the eight-film franchise. In a candid interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Radcliffe shared his favorite and least favorite entries in the series, revealing that his tastes have evolved over time.

A Changing Perspective

Radcliffe admitted that as he’s aged, some of the earlier films in the franchise have gone from being watchable to unwatchable for him. He explained that when he was 18, he would cringe watching the early films, but now he finds them sweet. However, he still cringes at his younger self, particularly when he was 18 or 19.

He speculated that this cringe cycle will continue as he gets older, but that doesn’t stop him from offering a subjective ranking of his best and worst picks.

The Bracket Challenge

For the interview, Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz presented Radcliffe with a bracket-style challenge, pairing the first and second films, third and fourth films, and so on. This led to a final showdown between Radcliffe’s top picks. Before even reaching the final round, Radcliffe revealed that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 is his favorite of all the films.

When asked to choose between the fifth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Radcliffe said Order of the Phoenix is far and away his favorite. He described Half-Blood Prince as “probably the bottom of the bracket for me.”

Ultimately, the bracket-style selections yielded Deathly Hallows — Part 2 and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as his top two picks, which he easily ceded to Deathly Hallows — Part 2.

“I’m fascinated. I wouldn’t have said now if we — interesting,” Radcliffe stammered. “I don’t think I knew that Goblet of Fire would have been my second-favorite film. Although it would have survived if the bracket were different. It would have gone a different way.”

Surprising Choices

Radcliffe also praised Chamber of Secrets because he loves the basilisk. He even asked for mercy from Potter fans when choosing Goblet of Fire over the beloved Prisoner of Azkaban.

“I know everyone wants me to say Azkaban. I know that’s how everyone else feels, but I love the stuff I got to do on the fourth movie,” he said.

A New Perspective

Though Radcliffe’s heart seems to be opening to rewatching his Potter films, he shared in March that he’s “delighted” his son can experience the story via HBO’s upcoming series adaptation instead. “I feel like watching it with your dad would be less cool. It would take you out of it,” he explained.

Final Thoughts

Radcliffe’s reflections on the Harry Potter franchise highlight how personal taste can evolve over time. While he may not be the biggest fan of rewatching his own work, especially when it comes to Harry Potter, he remains open to revisiting the films with a fresh perspective.

His insights offer a unique look into the mind of an actor who grew up in the spotlight and now looks back on his career with both nostalgia and critical distance. Whether it’s the magic of the basilisk or the emotional depth of Order of the Phoenix, Radcliffe’s choices reflect a deep connection to the world he helped bring to life.
