Major Cream Cheese Recall Issued Over Listeria Contamination Fears
A significant recall has been put in place for hundreds of tubs of cream cheese and whipped tofu due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacterium. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified this recall as Class I, its most severe warning, indicating a “reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
New York-based Made Fresh Salads has voluntarily recalled a wide array of its 5lb cream cheese and whipped tofu products. The recall encompasses 14 distinct flavours, all bearing expiration dates up to and including February 27, 2026.
The affected flavours include:
* Apple Cinnamon
* Caramel Apple
* Blueberry
* Garlic and Herb
* Jalapeno
* Jalapeno Cheddar
* Lox
* Scallion
* Strawberry
* Sundried Tomato
* Vegetable
* Walnut Raisin
* Whipped Cream Cheese
* Tofu Whipped
These products were distributed directly to retail stores and other distributors across Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and the broader New York City metropolitan area.
The recall was initiated following routine internal sampling by Made Fresh Salads. This sampling revealed that a component of a mixer used in the manufacturing process was contaminated with Listeria. In response, the company has immediately ceased production utilising the identified mixer and has removed it from service. While the initial recall was announced last month, the FDA’s recent Class I classification underscores the seriousness of the potential health risks.

Understanding the Dangers of Listeria
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause a severe infection known as listeriosis. While most healthy individuals exposed to the bacteria may experience mild symptoms or none at all, the infection poses a significant threat to certain vulnerable populations.
What is Listeria?
Listeria is a resilient bacterium commonly found in environments such as soil, water, decaying vegetation, and animals. It is known for its ability to survive and even multiply in refrigerated conditions and other food preservation methods, making it a persistent challenge in food safety.
How is it Transmitted?
Listeriosis is primarily contracted by consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The bacteria can contaminate a wide range of foods, but it is particularly associated with:
* Unpasteurised milk and dairy products, including some soft cheeses.
* Ready-to-eat foods, such as pre-packaged sandwiches and salads.
* Cooked shellfish.
* Cured meats and fish, including sushi.
* Pre-cut fruits.
Symptoms and Risks:
For most people, listeriosis symptoms are mild and may include diarrhoea and muscle aches. However, for pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, the infection can have severe and even fatal consequences.
- Pregnant Women: Listeria infection can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, and life-threatening infections in newborns.
- Elderly and Immunocompromised Individuals: The infection can spread from the gut to the central nervous system, causing serious complications such as confusion, seizures, and meningitis.
- General Population: In severe cases, listeriosis can lead to sepsis and death. Annually, an estimated 250 Americans die from listeriosis, and approximately 1,250 people are infected.
Currently, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this specific recall.
