Virgin Money Launches Dementia Clinics to Support Sufferers and Carers

Virgin Money has taken a significant step in supporting individuals affected by dementia by opening dedicated clinics in select branches. This initiative has been praised as “brilliant” by former ITN presenter John Suchet, whose wife, Bonnie, passed away due to the disease.

The move comes under the ownership of Nationwide Building Society, which acquired Virgin Money for £2.9 billion in 2024. Nationwide already operates dementia support clinics in nearly 250 branches, staffed by Admiral nurses. These nurses are trained specialists who provide expert care and guidance to those dealing with the challenges of dementia.

The primary goal of these new clinics is to bring essential support services directly to the High Street. This approach aims to make it easier for patients and carers to access help, especially as the NHS faces challenges with long waiting lists. By offering on-site assistance, Virgin Money hopes to reduce the burden on healthcare systems and improve the quality of life for those affected by dementia.

A New Approach to Dementia Care

The initiative aligns with the broader efforts of the Mail’s ‘Defeat Dementia’ campaign, which focuses on reducing the risk of developing the condition, promoting early diagnosis, funding research, and improving overall care for those living with dementia. John Suchet, who has spoken publicly about his personal experience with dementia, emphasized the importance of face-to-face interactions with specialist Admiral Nurses. He said: “Dementia affects every aspect of someone’s life, so being able to speak to a specialist Admiral Nurse face-to-face about both the practical and emotional challenges dementia can bring can make a huge difference.”

Expanding Access to Dementia Support

The first phase of the clinic rollout will see 12 Virgin Money branches in the North open their doors next month. From July, similar services will be available in Scotland. Importantly, these clinics are open to anyone, including non-customers, ensuring that support is accessible to all who need it.

Each appointment lasts 45 minutes and takes place in a private room, allowing for confidential and focused discussions. The sessions are free of charge, making them an affordable option for individuals and families seeking assistance.

The long-term vision is to expand these clinics to more of Virgin Money’s 91 branches across the UK. This expansion would significantly increase the number of people who can benefit from the support offered by Admiral nurses.
