Demi Lovato Shines at Film Premiere, Opens Up About Culinary Triumph in Eating Disorder Recovery
Demi Lovato cut a striking figure at a recent event, radiating confidence just as she candidly shared her ongoing journey of recovery from an eating disorder. The acclaimed 33-year-old artist was spotted looking exceptionally stylish in a chic leather ensemble while attending the screening of her film, Tow, in New York City.
Her outfit featured a sophisticated black leather jacket, distinguished by bold red accent panels that adorned the torso and sleeves. This was complemented by a pleated black leather midi skirt, creating a cohesive and impactful look. Lovato’s raven-coloured hair was styled down with a neat middle part, and her makeup highlighted her flawless porcelain complexion. A smoky eye and a glossy pink lip gloss added the finishing touches to her glamorous appearance.

At the premiere, Lovato was joined by her talented castmates, including Rose Byrne, Dominic Sessa, and Simon Rex. Director Stephanie Laing was also present, celebrating the film’s debut. In Tow, Lovato takes on the role of Nova, a character whose story is intertwined with that of Amanda Ogle, portrayed by Rose Byrne. The film centres on Amanda, a homeless woman in Seattle who navigates a difficult path to reclaim her life and car after being hit with an exorbitant tow bill of $21,634. The film is slated for a limited release in the US starting this Friday, March 20.
Finding Freedom in the Kitchen: Lovato’s Cookbook Journey
The day prior to the film screening, Lovato spoke about a significant milestone in her recovery from an eating disorder: learning to cook. She described this newfound culinary skill as a “huge win.” This heartfelt admission came during a promotional event for her new cookbook, held with Eli Rallo at the 92nd Street Y in New York.
Her cookbook, titled One Plate At A Time: Recipes For Finding Freedom With Food, is scheduled for release on March 31. Lovato, who has openly battled bulimia for years, shared that her relationship with cooking began to transform approximately five years into her recovery, around the age of 30.
“I think this whole book is celebratory because it’s a celebration of how far I’ve come,” Lovato stated. She elaborated on her past struggles: “I used to step foot into a grocery store and break down into tears because I was so overwhelmed by all of the food. And now I’m not only going into grocery stores and shopping myself, but I’m also cooking the meals that I’m making, and that’s a huge win for me.”

Lovato also revealed that she used to abstain from enjoying certain “fun foods.” She reflected, “There was a time in my life where I wouldn’t celebrate my birthdays with cakes, and so to have a birthday cake recipe in my cookbook is so meaningful and has been so rewarding.”
This personal triumph comes in the wake of reports that Lovato has significantly changed her diet and exercise routine over the past year, reportedly losing 50 pounds. A memorable dinner with friends served as a turning point, making her realise the progress she had achieved.
“We turned it into this spaghetti squash salad. That was the first recipe that I cooked with friends where I was like, ‘Wow, this is actually really fun,'” she recalled. The former Disney star added, “When I actually stepped foot into the kitchen and had so much joy come from it, and I was proud of what I made.”
A Cookbook for Healing and Connection
Lovato’s motivation behind creating the cookbook stems from a desire to help others find similar healing and comfort. “I wanted to create a cookbook that was for people who may have had disordered eating in the past or are just intimidated to step foot into the kitchen for the first time,” she explained. Her core message is about fostering comfort and confidence: “It’s just about getting in the kitchen and getting comfortable around cooking, and that will set you up for success later down the road with more recipes.”

In a previous announcement about the project, Lovato, a longtime friend of Selena Gomez, shared her personal connection to the recipes: “This book is filled with simple, comforting recipes that have allowed me to reconnect with myself and find both freedom and joy in my kitchen – feelings I never thought I could experience.”
Reflecting on her evolving perspective, the ex-partner of Joe Jonas also noted, “It has allowed me to see cooking as an act of love and kindness to myself and those in my life, and I hope this book can bring that same feeling into your home too.”
The cookbook boasts over 80 recipes, featuring dishes such as ‘Spag Bol’, Chicken Milanese with arugula salad, and ‘Foolproof Pulled Pork’. Each recipe is presented within the context of Demi’s personal journey of healing and her evolving relationship with food after years of struggling with bulimia.
