Mrs. Brown’s Boys Star Dermot O’Neill’s Wife Faces Terminal Cancer Diagnosis
Dermot O’Neill, a beloved figure from the hit BBC sitcom Mrs. Brown’s Boys, is currently providing devoted care for his wife, Patricia, as she bravely battles a terminal cancer diagnosis. The news comes after Patricia, affectionately known as ‘Chickie’ Maguire, spent considerable time nursing Dermot through his own serious health scare.
Patricia, aged 60, received the devastating diagnosis of stage four cancer during a trip to Spain intended for a routine hernia repair. Surgeons discovered tumours in her stomach and were unable to proceed with the operation. Now back in Ireland, she is undergoing chemotherapy, with Dermot, 74, by her side every step of the way.
Dermot, who is widely recognised for his role as Granddad in Mrs. Brown’s Boys, had himself battled cancer. He was diagnosed in 2019 after discovering a lump in his throat. Thankfully, he received the all-clear the following year, a stark contrast to his wife’s current prognosis.
In a poignant interview, Patricia shared the grim reality of her situation, revealing that doctors have given her only months to live. She spoke of Dermot’s unwavering support, describing him as “amazing” and a “real man’s man” who never imagined he would see her so ill, given the 14-year age difference between them.

“When the doctor told me it was stage four cancer,” Patricia recounted, “he said I had months to live, rather than years. I was choking when I got the news. They can’t reverse the cancer, only prolong my life.”
The most challenging moment for Patricia was breaking the news to her two sons, Salvador, 39, and Evan, 24. She revealed to The Sun how the family rallied together in the face of the devastating revelation. “Dermot put his hand on my knee and both boys held each of my hands, and we all hugged and cried,” she shared. “I told them it’s a fact of life, I have cancer in my body. We have to deal with this. What else can we do?”
Patricia has commenced chemotherapy, holding onto the hope that it can extend her life. “I have started chemotherapy — if I can get six months out of it we can roll for another six months,” she explained.
During the interview, Patricia admitted to worrying about the emotional toll her diagnosis was having on Dermot.
Dermot and Patricia, pictured here at an event hosted by Mrs. Brown’s Boys creator Brendan O’Carroll in Dublin, have been together for two decades and married in 2012. Their blended family includes seven children from previous relationships. Patricia recalled Dermot’s romantic proposal, which came via text message while he was on tour with the Mrs. Brown’s Boys cast.
Dermot’s Past Health Battle
Dermot O’Neill, who has portrayed Granddad on the popular BBC sitcom since its inception in 2011, faced his own cancer scare in 2019. The discovery of a lump in his neck led to a diagnosis that sent shockwaves through his life.

Following treatment, Dermot experienced anxiety when he noticed swelling in his neck, fearing a recurrence of the disease. However, subsequent tests were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was eventually given the all-clear, a moment of immense relief he described to The Sun: “I’m over the moon, It’s such a load off my mind. I had been living a nightmare with a swollen neck and this thing flashing through my mind, ‘Is that the cancer back?’ Now I can go back and live my life.”
A Christmas Favourite
Mrs. Brown’s Boys has become a staple of the BBC’s festive programming for over ten years. The show has also enjoyed several mini-series runs, including a four-part instalment last year, the first since 2013. The series centres around the character of Agnes Brown, affectionately known as ‘Mammy’, a foul-mouthed but loving Irish matriarch.
