Hollywood Star’s Opera and Ballet Comments Spark Online Firestorm, Then a U-Turn
A recent on-stage conversation featuring Hollywood heartthrob Timothée Chalamet has ignited a fierce debate online, with the young actor’s dismissive remarks about opera and ballet drawing sharp criticism. The incident, which occurred during a discussion at the University of Texas in February and was later shared on YouTube by Variety, saw Chalamet express his disinterest in art forms he felt were struggling to maintain relevance.

The “Marty Supreme” star, while discussing the importance of preserving cinema, stated, “I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive’, even though like no one cares about this anymore.” The comment, though Chalamet reportedly recognised its controversial nature almost immediately, quickly reverberated across social media platforms, leading to an avalanche of backlash.
Doja Cat Enters the Fray: A Passionate Defence
Among the most prominent voices to weigh in on the controversy was Grammy-winning musician Doja Cat. She took to TikTok to express her dismay at Chalamet’s pronouncements, posting a now-deleted video where she directly addressed the actor.
“Opera is 400 years old. Ballet is 500 years old,” Doja Cat stated, highlighting the rich histories of these art forms. “Somebody named Timothée Chalamet, big guy, by the way, had the nerve to say on camera that nobody cares about it.”

She went on to passionately defend the enduring appeal and respect accorded to opera and ballet. “I’m sure you can walk into an opera theatre right now, seats will be filled out, and nobody’s saying a word as the performance is going because everybody has that much respect for it,” she asserted. Doja Cat emphasised the inherent “etiquette” surrounding these performances, describing them as “amazing theatre medium[s]” and “f** beautiful.”
A Surprising Retraction: “Virtue Signalling” and a Craving for Connection
However, the narrative took an unexpected turn when Doja Cat herself issued a retraction of her earlier statements in a subsequent TikTok video. The 30-year-old artist confessed that her passionate defence was, in fact, an act of “virtue signalling.”
“I know nothing about opera and nothing about ballet,” Doja Cat admitted candidly, revealing that she had never attended a performance of either art form. She explained her motivation for speaking out, describing a desire to “give it to the man” and participate in a culture driven by outrage and a need to feel connected to something larger.
“What I was doing yesterday was virtue signalling,” she continued, explaining that she had sought to “leverage Timothée’s goof up” as a means for people to connect with her online.

Doja Cat further elaborated that at the time, she hadn’t deeply considered her reasons for intervening in the debate. However, she acknowledged that this approach, while a “modern way to garner clicks, likes and approval,” was an easy method to attract attention on the internet. Known for her comedic lip-syncing videos on TikTok, she concluded her apology with a heartfelt admission: “I just wanted a hug. I wanted to feel like I was part of something bigger than myself. I wanted to look like a hero.”
Fan Support and the Quest for Authenticity
Following her confession, many of Doja Cat’s fans rallied behind her, questioning the necessity of her apology. One fan commented, “I mean nothing u said in ur video was bad tho?” To this, Doja Cat responded, “I’m not saying it was I’m saying I wasn’t coming from a genuine place.”

Speculation arose that her retraction might have been influenced by pressure from her record label. However, the “Woman” singer quickly dismissed this notion. “No nobody hit me up I just felt like a fraud cuz I literally have never even been to an opera or a ballet and I think my mistake gave me an opportunity to actually be authentic,” she explained. Her admission highlighted a personal journey towards greater authenticity, spurred by an unexpected online controversy.
