Dolphins Prop Tom Flegler Sidelined with Rib Injury
Brisbane’s own Dolphins are facing a significant blow ahead of their upcoming clash with the Cronulla Sharks, with star prop Tom Flegler officially ruled out of the match due to a rib injury. The injury sustained in round two has forced the club to adopt a cautious approach, prioritising Flegler’s long-term health over immediate game time.
Flegler was forced from the field during the Dolphins’ recent encounter with the Gold Coast Titans last weekend. He did not return for the second half after undergoing assessment for the painful rib complaint during the halftime break. Reports indicate that the premiership-winning forward received a painkilling injection at halftime in an attempt to continue playing, highlighting the severity of the knock.
Given the inherently physical nature of the front-row position in rugby league, and the relentless demands placed on forwards week in and week out, the Dolphins coaching staff have made the difficult decision not to risk exacerbating Flegler’s injury. This conservative strategy is particularly pertinent given Flegler’s recent history with injuries.
Dolphins prop Tom Flegler has been ruled out of this weekend’s match against the Cronulla Sharks after suffering a rib injury in round 2.
The Queensland Origin representative has only recently made his return to the field after a prolonged period on the sidelines due to long-term shoulder damage. Flegler has unfortunately missed a substantial portion of the last two seasons since his arrival at the Dolphins, making his current injury a concerning setback for both the player and the club.
Flegler had initially been named to start in the crucial Saturday fixture against the Sharks. However, with his withdrawal, the team will need to reshuffle their forward pack. The most likely candidates to step into the starting front-row rotation are Felise Kaufusi or Sebastian Su’a, both of whom were named on the interchange bench. One of these players is expected to be promoted to the starting side, with the remaining player potentially filling a more prominent role on the bench.
Furthermore, the reserve players, Lewis Symonds and Brian Pouniu, will see their roles potentially elevated. With one of the bench forwards likely moving into the starting team, the other reserve player is expected to be added to the interchange bench, providing crucial depth and cover in the forward rotation. This reshuffling underscores the importance of the entire squad and the need for players to be ready to step up when called upon. The Dolphins will be hoping for a swift and full recovery for Flegler, as they aim to maintain their strong start to the season without him.
